Fast network storage for upto 4x NVMe drives, plus a huge-spec dual 2.5Gbps LAN full mini-pc!
I bought this GMKtec G9 to fill with NVMe drives (they're fast anyway) and connect via 2.5Gbps onto my 10Gbps home network to offer blazingly quick storage for all our computers. Though, it could ALSO allow someone to buy a computer where the factory-fitted non-upgradeable onboard storage is relatively expensive and gain from lower cost solid-state FAST network attached storage. The questions for my GMKtec G9 are:1) Will the G9 accept the 2x 2TB NVMe drives I bought?Yes - 2x Samsung 990 EVO Plus, 2TB, PCIe 4.0 x4 MZ-V9S2T0BW - inserted, working, no issues.2) Is the supplied Windows legit, will it update, activate, and configure a single ~4TB spanning the two 2TB NVMEs?Yes, yes, and yes again. The G9 did all the windows updates, let it reboot, and same again, no driver warning triangles in Windows Device Manager.Brilliant, and don't underestimate the importance of that!Checked the Microsft activation status - perfect, a clean cpoy of Windows 11.Then in Windows I configured a 4TB volume from the 2x 2TB drives, and set that 4TB volume as a network share (SMB protocol).3) How fast does Black Magic's Disk Test report that the G9 can drive those NVMEs, and how does that compare to other similar setups in the real world? My thoughts being if the Black Magic Disk Test values are low, then over the network the disk IO performance when in the G9 wouldn't be expected to be any better than that. An honest review, right? But G9 for it's PCIe 3 internals reports back comparable values to the NVME attached over 10Gbps USB to my M1 Mac Studio. The G9 values are 2195MB/s write and 1975MB/s read locally on the G9, compared to 2191MB/s write and 2623MB/s read on the Mac Studio to it's external Samsung NVMe. Between the lines I'm taking it that it's on par with an NVME connect over fast USB-C to my M1 Mac Studio - and that's a good outcome.4) How fast can I copy files to the G9 from Windows over the network?I run a 10Gbps LAN, which means it can accept devices running 10Gbps, 5Gbps, 2.5Gbps, 1Gbps and 100Mbps.In Windows the G9's onboard RJ45 network ports established a connection at their fastest rate - 2.5Gbps and file transfers from my 10Gbps M1 Mac Studio to the G9 shared folder transferred at ~2.2Gbps/2.3Gbps. Perfect, and I didn't even need to fiddle/enable jumbo frames, it just worked. My LAN switch is a Netgear 8 Port 10GB Switch (XS508M) btw.5) How fast will the G9 run a speedtest to the internet? My Virgin Media connection is 1.12Gbps, and the G9 tested at full rate, in both directions ~1.1Gbps down and ~100Mbps up.Perfect score, those 2.5Gbps network interfaces pass traffic at speeds that 1Gbps interfaces can't!6) How fast can I copy files to it in Linux, and how fast does it perform a speed test?I rebooted the G9, repestedly tapped F7 key on boot, and selected Ubuntu from the factory-supplied dual boot menu manager (thank you GMKtec for that...messing with GRUB to create a dual boot is only for the brave and those who are well backed-up)Logged into Ubuntu using the pwd "12345", used ChatGPT to allow Ubuntu to use the Windows configured 4TB spanned volume (Linux calls it LDM), and set up Samba (that what Linux refers to for file sharing for Windows machines)Anyway, the Ubuntu 22 on G9 performed exactly the same as G9 running Windows, ~ 2Gbps file transfer over the network and a full rate speedtest >1.1Gbps. Perfect.70 Dual HDMI - yes I tried that too, in both Windows and Linux though dual monitors isn't my setup because I run a 34" LG 21:9 3440 x 1440 (UltraWide 34WN780P). But I hooked one HDMI into my monitor and the other into my Elgato 4K capture card. Not quite sure where to go with that, but it's a feature.I think G9 is an epic machine as supplied, add either two or four* NVMEs and connect it to a 2.5Gbps switch and client machines. My next steps will be to install Open Media Vault onto the G9, which will free up one NVME m.2 slot *BECAUSE the G9's supplied Windows is installed onto an m.2 from the factory which only leaves 3x m.2 slots available. No issues if you're running Windows on the G9 - add 3x m.2 NVMEs (make them PCIe 3 to drop the costs further?)Anyway, the factory supplied Ubuntu is installed into eMMC memory in the G9 - yes a different physical piece of memory, and that's where I'll install OMV....or you could install Windows to I suppose.I'll also try to bond the dual 2.5Gbps together (though that's an OMV topic, I've no idea if OMV supports???)I know my Netgear 8x ports of 10Gbps but it's unmanaged...so I can't configure LACP on it....might be time to update my network switch to keep up with the G9 and squeeze out any remaining speed from those NVMEs!

You can run TrueNAS in it!
I purchased this mini PC with the intention of replacing my aging QNAP TS-251(more on this later). The G9 N150 arrived well packed with 12GB DDR5, 64 GB EMMC and an 1TB NVME. The mini-PC had both Windows 11 and Ubuntu 24.10 installed. There was nothing special about the unit besides its tiny size, compared to my old NAS. If you have had any other computer from GMKtec, the style is the same as the others (I also have a G5 running a web server). My only complaint is about being all plastic as this makes the cooling harder (more on this later). The plan was to add 4 larger NVMEs (2TB) and run the NAS with a RAIDz drive format, which would give me enough space to transfer files from my old NAS.I wanted an open-source NAS platform. Initially, the recommendation from others was to install OpenMediaVault as TrueNAS has had installation issues on EMMC drives. However, there was some hope I could go directy to TrueNAS if I installed an older version and followed with an upgrade. Therefore, I downloaded the TrueNAS SCALE 24.04.2.5 and followed the instructions on how to install. I used the 64 GB EMMC as my boot OS disk. I also modified the G9 bios to turn on after a power outage. The installation of the Dragonfish (24) of TrueNAS was without any issues and soon I was accessing the system via the webpage and completing the task with a full upgrade to the ElectricEel version 25. I installed the 4 NVME drives and set up them as RAIDZ1, allowing me to have the security of one of the disks going faulty without loosing the RAID.Overall, I am pretty happy with the NAS and the timing was almost perfect. When I went to transfer the files from my old TS-251 I discovered the drive had just failed. It took me a full day to recover it and transfer them to the new PC. If there is an issue, is mostly regarding the temperatures of the drivers. They get quite hot at 54 degrees. In summary, I have a device with very low power consumption, easy to be installed and with almost no noise level. Quite happy.

Very good for the money.
Great little unit, minimal set up. Happily communicating at 300Mbps +. Pair it with a wireless keyboard and mouse to get a tidy desk. Comes complete with a bracket to mount it to the back of a monitor. One monitor is ok but because of what I do, I have 3 screens, and it doesn't break a sweat. Runs Windows 365 seamlessly and although I've only had it a week, but it's shaping up to be a very capable little box.

Great picture. Nice speed
A very good PC for the money. A very good speed. USB3 works well for my external drive. Great picture quality, reasonably good sound (but I use an external sound card) and it sits nicely on the back of my monitor. The only thing is (and it's true of any PC) is that there are not enough USB ports. But that's easily solved with an external hub :)

Great duel boot mini pc
Taken me a couple of weeks to write this review as I needed time to settle in using the duel operating system mini pc. After several days of updating Ubuntu and Windows 11, this pc is amazing value if you need both systems as I did. Plays retro games very well without any problems. I have had around 4 mini pc's before but none come up to this standard. Highly recommend this seller

Great
This is a fantastic device. Bought for elderly relative who had a monitor already and just wanted a simple PC for emails and Internet. Perfect. He didn't need office so we just plugged everything in and we were ready to go
