Good basic drive that is fast and has a reasonable amount of storage
Not the biggest you can get these days but it just works, I use the drive as a backup for what I have on a number of different machines. Transfer speed is good enough for a backup drive (obviously not as fast as an SSD) but I don't think I'd use this for working with live files (as such). Price wise this is reasonable, not the cheapest but Western Digital drives are solid, you pay for reliability. I like it.

Media Drive
Bought this smaller drive for my mother so she can have increased storage and it works great. No setup and plenty of storage space for a media drive. Would recommend to anyone looking for great portable storage at a good price.

DISH NETWORK SUBSCRIBERS BEWARE !!
These are fine hard drives - the new, subcompact design is awesome - great colors - they're incredibly lighter and smaller than the previous style...love digital advancements - if you intend to use this drive as storage for your DISH NETWORK DVR RECORDINGS...FORGET IT!!! - the problem is NOT with the Western Digital Hard Drives - I've got tons of WD hard drives...never a problem - DISH receivers have a software problem (for many months now) that makes these new, smaller hard drives unusable with them - I spent 1.5 hours on the phone with DISH last night - they've known about the problem (and it's not just with Western Digital small drives) - they've never bothered to notify customers who use the external hard drive feature - they can't find or fix the problem in the software THEY designed!...AGAIN...FOR MANY MONTHS NOW! - the DISH DVR will format the drive and allow you to move recordings to the drive until you have about 1600 gigabits or gigabytes (?) left on a 2 terabyte drive (that's a LOT of recording space left, considering it will hold 1800 gigabytes) - then they quit working...so you THINK its working, then you get the surprise of wasted time and cash - I've got two drives that have done it - unless you have another use for the drive, IT'S WASTED MONEY! - and the old-style larger drives are no longer available - DISH offers nothing for this loss of features and use, and have no idea IF OR WHEN it will EVER be fixed (great customer service, eh?) - and you can't talk to the employees/department responsible for fixing it, either...they're protected and insulated from irate customers - the reps. will talk to you nice and, in the end, DO NOTHING! - and I'm a 12-year subscriber - I dumped DirecTV because of very poor customer service - DISH has now reached the same level - BETRAYED AND ANGRY

Great sturdy little unit!
I've had the old Western Digital (the one you had to plug in to a wall) and lasted me for years, I even dropped a few times and it kept working. But it was time for a new external hard drive and more memory, so I decided to get a new one with a company I trusted. So far so good, it's compact, sturdy, and I don't have any issues with it so far.

MOSTLY TRUSTWORTHY, BUT
I have more than a dozen external hard drives in my library of devices. I once trusted a single wd device to store my photos and when the drive stopped working and made it impossible to draw off any information from that drive I went out and began buying one more drive after another to be sure I had a second, third or forth safe storage device at hand. I have had great success with Seagate, Western Digital and other manufacturers, so I don't think one is well above the other in securing your important information. I do happen to like the colors of the devices so it is easier to find a particular device for one purpose or another. they are well made and I haven't had enough problems with wd to leave their products for others. I also look at price and wd is at the same price or cheaper than the others most of the time which is why I just bought three more of these as they are packing more space into the newer drives. at one time I could get a 160, 320, 500, then 1t and now 2t for the same prices of about 100 dollars and now I can get a 2t drive for about 60 dollars now that the new SSD drives are being pushed in the market....

Even a ludite can use it
My other product stopped working when I upgraded to the new Windows program. Of course, I didn't realize that until after my computer died and I lost files. This one was awesome--plug it in, click a couple things, select the days and times you want it to backup your system and you are done. It works fine with Windows and doesn't require hours of downloading and whatever it is I was supposed to have done to get the old back up to work.

Included software DOES NOT WORK with this drive
DO NOT get this drive if you plan to use WD Backup software. The description states: "Auto backup with included WD Backup software" - But, WD backup software does not support this drive. I followed every item they provided to 'fix' the issue and nothing worked. The included WD Backup software simply refuses to recognize this drive. There are many people with this same issue and no solution from WD ... except to use Windows built-in backup software. It looks like a known issue and the drive is marketed as support WD Auto-Backup. Very deceptive. I do not imagine I will purchase another WD drive. But, if you just want a 2TB drive, this will work and seems to work as well as any other drive. Just don't be surprised it the included software does not work for you.
