Yes, the box is made of a hatbox-type of material and was just as pretty as the cups within.

The handles are solid bone china. It depends on what you do to them. I would say not. Bone China means that bone is mixed in the clay that the china is made out of. I have bone china that you drop a cup and it bounces across the floor and does not chip it is so durable. If you put the cups in the micro and the handles get hot there is most likely a flaw in the material. It would not normally get hot. Hope that this helps. I gave these to a friend as a gift.
