Q: What do i have to do if the seat is not closing softly

Unfortunately you have to purchase a whole new replacement kit as they don't sell the dampers separately. This is the one I purchased on Amazon. - Kohler 1150464-0 Hinge Kit for Elongated Toilet Seat, White.

Q: Maybe this is a stupid question... Why is everyone just replacing the broken part? Why not install the entire new hinge?

The broken part is the hinge, or my case the plastic attached to the hinge that secures to the bowl with a screw and nut. One removes the old hinge assembly and installs this new one in 5 minutes. Since the toilet seat and the lid itself are intact and fine, this kit is a more economical solution. The hinge was about $15 and a whole new seat and hinge was $30-45.

Q: Is this the part I need if the soft close part of the seat no longer works?

YES!!!! The black elongated pin, and the non blac elongated pin are what make the seating part of the toilet seat soft close, and the lid to cover the seating part of the lid to soft close. The Non Black elongated pin makes the toilet lid soft close. And the elongated black pin makes the seating part of the lid soft close. What usually happens is, if you force on a regular basis the lids to come down quickly rather than soft close, it puts pressure on the narrower portion of the elongated pins and brakes them (rendering them useless).

Q: Can I buy just the dampers?

Unfortunately the dampers were not available individually and one had to buy the entire kit.
