Fluke 59 Max+ Infrared Thermometer, Yellow, 59 Max Plus, 10:1 DTS Ratio, FLUKE-59 MAX+ NA, LCD

The manual does not give emissivity value for human skin. I looked it up elsewhere and it gave me a setting of 96-98. I set it accordingly and got pretty close to a mercury thermometer. Is this instrument recommended for reading body temperature? Thks

BLUF: Accurate Infrared Thermometer and easy to use.I am giving this product a 4 star due to the Pros and Cons belowPros:1. Price. You can't beat the $80 for this product. Yes, you can find cheaper IR thermometer but they are not as accurate and durable as Fluke products. These cheap Chinese knockoffs are usually around $20 but they will last you a year or so and not as durable at this one.2. Easy to Use. Very user friendly.3. Black lit light. Perfect to see in the dark4. Laser so you can aim the thermometer5. Ability to read temperature off different surfaces (also a con)6. High Quality. Very Durable7. Great Fluke Warranty8. Compact and lightweight9. Built in auto shutoff to conserve battery if you forget to turn off the unitCons:1. User Manual is HORRIBLE and lacking. No verbage/words but filled with pictures instead. Stop trying to copy Apple's approach. When I buy a high tech gadget I want to be able to read the detail specification and the lengthy manual explaining each feature.2. Have to manually adjust the thermometer Emissivity when reading different surfaces (ie...getting temperature from water surface or your wall). This is due to the different reflection/refraction properties of the different surfaces.

A little tricky to figure out how to adjust the emissivity correctly for accurate temps but works great

I am a chef who teaches culinary classes to high school students. Once of the hardest thing for these students to understand is exactly how warm is a warm or hot pan. I needed something that could give them the visual temperature while holding their hand over the pan bottom so they could get used to approximate heats.This Fluke IR Thermometer is definitely an answer to my problems. Not only will I be able to show pan heat, but I'll also be able to gauge the heat on a deck (pizza) oven's deck. A thermometer measures only the ambient air, this will do the slab where pizza and other bread crusts sit.I knew the Fluke brand's reputation for use and was persuaded to buy this one after just a little investigation and a lot of faith in the brand name.

I originally bought this to measure the chimney temperature on my wood burning stove. It's now in use measuring the differential in temperature between plants in my garden and the temperature of the surrounding soil. Some plants use more water than others, and register cooler leaf temperatures. I can tell if my plants are drought-stressed. The tepary beans are a bean from the southwest meant for a hot, low-water environment and uptake of water is slowest there, so the temperature of the plant is closer to the temperature of the soil. Curiouser and curiouser.This winter the IR thermometer will come in and tell me if my wood burning stove is running hot or cold.

Very nice instrument. I like the fact that it takes a AA battery instead of the usual 9 volt version. However I don't like the fact that it takes a screwdriver to open the door to change the battery. Because I use this instrument seldom, I don't leave the battery inserted. This is my only complaint. Please seek other reviewers for the meter specifics. I only use this meter for home use. 10/1 spot ratio. There are better meters out there but at this price point and for most homeowners, its great. I have to give it 5 stars. Made in China. I recommend!
