This is an awesome razor
As a relative newcomer to DE shaving (only a few months now), I approached the R41 with a fair amount of caution, given its reputation as an unforgiving, bloodthirsty beast. I'd been shaving with a Merkur 180 and developing my technique, and while I was able to achieve the shave i wanted with the Merkur, it took more time and passes than I wanted to do, leading to some skin irritation once I finally got as close as I wanted. I chalked this up to the extremely benign design of the Merkur safety bar head and its limited blade exposure. So I sought out something more aggressive. After reading a lot on Badger & Blade, and the reviews here on Amazon, I opted for the Muhle R41 because it was one of the *most* aggressive razors out there, if not the most aggressive. I figured that I could always take a steep back and get something less "dangerous" if I found that I was slicing my face off with the thing, but I wanted to test my own limits, I guess. So, here are my impressions:First off, this is a very well made razor, the plating and finishing appear excellent and the construction seems first-rate. I must say though that I am not overly fond of the handle, which I find to be far too slippery to get a good grip with. That will be remedied when I replace the handle with something better. After the first week with it, I actually swapped the handle over from my Merkur, which has deeper knurling and feels much better in my hand, even though it's not as beefy. Also, for those who want to know, this is the later model (2013) R41. The width of the top cover will span and cover the full diameter of a penny, which is how the good folks over at Badger and Blade say you can tell one R41 type from another. So I loaded up the Derby blade that came with the R41 and proceeded to, with a great amount of fear and trepidation, attempt a shave with this thing. I lather up with some TOBs cream, and do my first pass with the grain... Whew! No nicks, no cuts, man you can really feel the blade though, right out there with nothing to protect you from your own ham-handed foolishness should you not be careful. But wow, this is the closest I have ever shaved with a single pass! Second pass, cross-grain. Still good, everything is going smoothly with no blood and my face feeling smooth enough to call it quits and head off to work. One more pass though, against the grain just to see what this puppy can really do. This time I can feel the resistance of the blade against my remaining beard stubble, almost stopping the blade cold in a few places around the chin. I press on, using perhaps more pressure than I should. I would up giving myself a half dozen nice weepers when I was done, but man, oh man was this a close shave.I tossed the Derby blade the next morning and tried a Crystal (Israeli Personna). Much sharper than the Derby and the results were just as close a shave, with only a couple of tiny weepers on the ATG pass again. Much less resistance at every blade angle, and I am very impressed indeed! This is very, very good, and I am thinking the Merkur may never get used again. On day three, I slipped in a Feather blade, and I think I may have found true shaving Nirvana. The Feather is truly an amazing blade, my favorite in the Merkur, and in the Muhle it meets almost no resistance around the problematic chin area and I finish my shave faster, with a perfectly smooth face and not so much as a drop of blood shed in the process.Gentlemen, this is one fine razor! Paired with the Feather blade and on my face at least, I will say with no hesitation I can't wish for a better shave than this razor is giving me every morning. it's been a few weeks since I bought the R41, and I haven't used anything else since. The only thing I plan to do is get a better handle for it, perhaps a bulldog, or something like it. Beyond that, no need. The R41 is truly a keeper. Someone is going to have to convince me there's something better first before I hang this one up.Final word: Make no mistake, this is a mean razor. There is whole a lot of blade hanging out there, just begging to do you harm. Some folks have said this is the closest you are going to get to a straight-razor shave and I agree with that statement. Even though I haven't done it yet, I have no doubt in my mind that if I am careless with it and don't watch my blade angle, it will slice me without a second thought and not feel the tiniest bit bad about it afterwards. And with that one warning, I will reiterate that this is a truly *amazing* razor. Treat it with respect and you will get the shave of your life from it. Don't buy this as your first razor to learn DE shaving with, but once you have some basic skills mastered and want to take your shave to the next level, this one waits for you. You won't be disappointed.

Great package. Will last years.
Do you wanna shave like a king? I have tried so many safety razors. Vikings blade was the start. I then got an adjustable razor. That really sucked. Now lets get to this. Its smooth, sleek, then handle contours perfectly. The shave is close and smooth. No cuts. Using feather blades. I would say dont get this unless youve been shaving a while. Helps with bumps!

Be sure to hone your blades first...
Open-comb safety razors are a lot less forgiving with a blade that wasn't honed before use. ('Honing' being as simple as running the blade's edge through a piece of cork to remove any kind of tiny metal shavings that are still there from the manufacturing process.) I learned this the hard way when I first used this razor. That being said, this razor works quite well for shaving unwanted body hair. It's great for the 'across the grain' pass in a 3-pass shave. It's also easy to clean. It's also the preferred kind of safety razor to use if you have really thick/curly hair in your beard. If there's any kind of negative I could say about this razor, it would be that I won't use it for shaving in the mustache/goatee area. The closed-comb razor that I also use works much better in that area. Also causes less nicks and cuts.

Next Level Shaving Experience
Warning: This is a long review and the conclusion is that this razor is amazing. It defies all logic and truly is the legit next level shaving experience.I’ll start by saying I have ultra sensitive skin, very thick coarse hair and I have been wet shaving with a DE safety razor for about 1 year.I have also used and will be comparing this R41 razor to the Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements DOC Razor, the Merkur HD 34C, a Weishi Butterfly Safety Razor and an unknown model vintage 3-piece Gillette razor from the 70’s.With all the other razors I mentioned, I experienced a lot of hair tugging, razor bumps and razor burns. No matter how much I slowed down and focused on technique, no matter what soap or cream I tried, no matter how much time I spent on my preshave and lather prep, no matter what blades I used, I got poor results and not that great of a shave either.I kept thinking that because I have super sensitive skin I should try finding a good mild razor and I looked at the Merkur 34C HD and the Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements DOC Razor because they both have very positive reviews and are reasonably popular amongst the wet shaving community. The Merkur 34C, for me, was little to no improvement over the cheap Weishi Butterfly Safety Razor and the vintage Gillette since it gave me consistent razor burn and tugging. The Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements DOC Razor was a decent improvement as it gave me much less razor burn but still have me lots of bumps on my neck and chin area (my trouble spots). For those who think that I’m getting bad shaves using the Merkur and the PAADOC is due to me being reckless with my shaving, I would also like to stress that I DO NOT APPLY PRESSURE WHEN I SHAVE AND I GO VERY SLOWLY AND FOCUS.So after about 4 months of razor burns and bumps I decided to try the opposite and go for an “aggressive” razor and found the Muhle R41. Best decision ever! I have been using it for 2 weeks now and get NO IRRITATION, NO BUMPS AND A CLOSE SMOOTH SHAVE. It goes against all logic that an “aggressive” razor would work so well for me but here is my theory on why.I believe that “aggressive” is not the right term and that it should be called “efficient.” I only make 2 passes using the R41 (one with the grain and one across the grain) and all the hair is gone. With the other razors I had to make 4-5 passes to get a similar amount of hair off my face. Also, this razor is heavier so I literally hold it with two fingers and let it glide across my face and it removes everything like a guillotine.Although I have tried many blades (listed bellow):Gillette silver blue,Gillette NACET,Gillette 7 o’Clock Super Platinum,Gillette 7 o’Clock sharpedge,Kai Blades,Wilkinson Sword, andPersonna Lab Blue.I prefer using Polsilver and Feathers blades, with Astra blades being a worthy 3rd, place in my R41.The R41 does require you to change up the way you hold your razor since most razors are supposed to be used at around 45 degrees to your face and this R41 is suggested to be used at around 30 degrees with your face meaning that you will have to use it at a much stepper angle. I think it help to imagine it such as if you start holding the R41 at a 90 degree angle to your face with the head of the razor flat against the skin and then you adjust the angle down ever so slightly.I found that shaving with the R41 is very easy and natural as long as you start slowly. I shave with it daily and have not cut or nicked myself a single time in the last 2 weeks. I have also noticed a serious improvement in my skin with the irritation slowly fading away.My one and only complaint about the R41 is the handle. I love the length and weight but it gets too slippery because the knurling is not very deep and is more about looks than function. I ordered both the Weber SS and the PAA SS Bomb Tip handles to fix this problem and will decide which feels better when they arrive sometime soon. But if you already have a handle that you love, since this is a standard 3 piece razor, just screw it on and you’re good to go.Overall, if you have very sensitive skin and thick hair like I do, you should definitely try the R41. It is not as scary as all the reviews make it sound and it could make your shaves light years better if you actually use it right and feel comfortable using it. It can potentially cut you if you don’t handle it properly, but then again so can any razor. The Muhle R41 is officially my go to and favorite razor and I don’t see myself changing it out anytime soon.

Closest shave ever
Very aggressive but pair it with Feather blades and it’s the smoothest shave I ever had
