Wonderful quality and color and sharpness and closed captioning - well worth my effort
My husband and I have been fans of Sharpe since first finding him decades ago on PBS. We made the video tapes, we transcribed them to CDs and even got our Library's copies. Those Sharpe films were great but the colors were washed out (heat of a Spanish summer perhaps). When I saw the reasonably priced set remastered, I took a chance. Brilliant move on my part. The colors are so much more vibrant and the details, even the uniform details are wonderous. The real kicker is that the closed captioning opens a whole additional level of appreciation. We feel as if we've watched a whole new and improved version. Which it is, for us.Yes, its' for Region 2. So we 'splurged' and bought another DVD player from Amazon and it works like a dream. It's made me order two additional series from Great Britain, which aren't available in Region 1, and the shipping and handling is half the price that US sellers put on theirs. For the closed captioning, you've just got to get this series. For the sharper colors, that's just a really wonderful langniappe.

Incorrect Product Information
I purchased this set of DVDs for my son as a gift. Before purchase, I made sure the product specifications said that the DVDs were viewable in a format available in the United States. Upon receipt of the DVDs my son tried to watch them. The first disc was viewable but all of the others are locked in a format not viewable in the U.S. As this item was a gift, I did not know that I was sent the wrong format for most of the discs, and was unable to return them within the return window.

Compelling Story
I first watched some of this series on public TV many years ago. I have looked for the series on DVD since. Unfortunately it was only available on the European version. I recently received a DVD player for the European region as a gift and after seeing an American version for over $100 I searched Amazon for alternatives. I was pleased to find this item at a reasonable price. The story is very compelling folioing the rise of a common soldier up from the ranks to become an officer in the British army of the early 1800's. Each episode corresponds to an actual battle of the period. Richard Sharpe is a real action hero of the times. Sean Bean plays the character to perfection. The production is very high quality. The supporting cast is great. The action and battle scenes show the horrors of war at that period very realistically. Development of the characters adds to the enjoyment of the series.I have started to read the book series by Bernard Cornwell. There are over 20 books in the series encompassing a wider length of Sharpe’s career and adventures. For history, military history and gun history I highly recommend the books and the DVD’s.

Sean Bean IS Richard Sharpe
The first time I saw one of the Richard Sharpe series of films was on A&E many, many years ago. I caught as many of them there as I could. Since then, I've read or bought most of the Bernard Cornwell novels as I could find, but always wanted the original British series. Then, when I finally found them here, imagine my surprise to learn they were what was called a Region 2 release and couldn't be played on American DVD players.Fortunately, somebody wrote a review stating it was possible by downloading a free Video Lan Client (VLC) software from the internet and I could just Google it, which I did. It's available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, so I did and then ordered the complete series. I can now watch them all on my laptop, just the way they were meant to be seen originally.

This is a great series.
I saw some of these when they were originally aired on PBS and loved them. I never got to see the entire series but bought the books and read them. I had looked for them for several years but only found them in Region 2 format. I happened to find a multi-region DVD player on Amazon for under $100 last year and got it so I could get some of my favorite series that are only available in Region 2 format. I have always wondered why all the British series aren't available in Region 1 (US) format because most Americans aren't aware that you can buy multi-region players.

Sharpe DVD series
The initial description of the DVD series did not say Non-USA format - after I printed out what I had purchased, it was in small print in the bottom of the right hand corner, which I did not read. I did not read that, so it was my fault on that one, but when I called up the series, the first place I looked at it on your site did not say Non-USA format. I could not play it on my DVD player. I double-checked and printed out that first page and sent it to the reseller, DaaVeeDee, and they only refunded about 3/4 of my money, after first suggesting that I buy a DVD player that plays Non-USA DVD's. I live in California, so that would seem to be a silly idea, since any movie I might buy here would be playable on my DVD player. I was buying something from a New Jersey company, so how could I be expected to know it wouldn't play on a Japanese made DVD player? This cannot be rated anything other than a very bad experience. However, thanks for re-teaching me that I need to be extremely careful about what I buy, even on a "trusted site" like Amazon. It cost me $40 to learn that lesson! I will not be buying any DVD's on Amazon again. I'm hoping you don't sell books in foreign languages without labeling them clearly?

Sean Bean to the max
Have you ever been distressed about that really cute actor only appearing for the glimpse of the moment on screen (Ronin, Henry VIII, Lord of the Ring)? - no matter how couragous or powerfull the appearance - or how much credit given to this man, wondering why he never stars in the leading role?(Richard) Sharpe is the ultimate collection for any fan of Sean Bean - next to his really stunning piece of acting and vocal skills (you learn to love this Sheffield accent - though the subtitles sometimes help to really understand what he's saying), you learn a lot about the english-french war in the time of "Boney" (Napoleon Bonaparte). It leaves just one question: "When are we going to see more?"Buy it - you'll love it!

Napoleonic Bond in bodice ripper shocker!
all 14 of the televised episodes are put together in this boxed-set which follows Sharpe & his band of men through the peninsular war & onto waterloo. Each episode is loosly based upon the books by Bernard Cornwell, & although they have been 'downsized' for television, (regiments being portrayed by a handful of men etc)they still manage to draw you into the plot. There are a few inconsistencies between the books & the screenplays (Cornwell's Sharpe is a londoner whereas Bean's Sharpe is from yorkshire, yet in Sharpe's Regiment he also claims to have London roots) OK, so i'm nit-picking a bit, however these minor points in no way detract from the excellent storylines or the presentation. The stories follow Sharpe on his quest to rise through the ranks and later for his revenge against his cheating wife. This usually involves a mission that only Sharpe & his band of men can complete, which of course they do, although not without the occasional casualty, which goes to show that no-one is indestructible, except of course, the gallant Sharpe! So, with the mission complete, the damsel saved (including the likes of Liz Hurley & Abigail Cruttenden) Sharpe makes it back to Wellington in time for tea & medals. Sean Bean is an excellent choice to portray Sharpe with his arrogance & hatred towards his fellow officers who hold their ranks & titles through financial means rather than the abilities that are shown by Sharpe on the battlefield, a comparison to todays forces perhaps???All that is missing is a Miss Moneypenny & some fancy gadgets, then we would have a 200 year old 007! Thoroughly recommended for anyone wether you have read the books or not. Congratulations to Bean et al.The boxed set itself contains 14 discs in a 7 box set. Each disc has a single episode, a photo gallery showing screen shots from the episode that runs like a powerpoint brief & gives a quick synopsis of the film. There is also a section of 'Sharpe Facts' containing such things as the weaponry used, some of the battles & other historical facts. There are also tokens to receive a further disc.Unfortunately my original set contained 4 faulty discs out of 14, but i am sure this is an exception rather than the rule.
