Linval Presents: Encounters Pac Man

The Dub Album That Encountered Some Slack, Man!
ok, panic over, fault addressed and re-pressed, but no gold stars for v.p.'s customer service department! they never got back to me on this, or on an unrelated to this, issue i had, so poor communication from a source you'd expect better of, while we're lining their pockets from these, has to be said, exceptional, re-issue programmes! possibly, also due to this upheaval, this volume cost me nearly a couple of pounds more than i paid for the others in the series! but, hey ho, the set now complete, as i was extra keen to get this one, partly due to 'space invaders' being my favourite of a very strong set of releases, and partly because i greatly admire linval thompson's work, and obviously, scientist's treatments given to it.for the price, the album is still really quite a bargain, due to the lavish and tasteful packaging, and the reverse concept of the dub material being the main attraction, the sources being the 'extra'. a nice touch! and of course, the source material bolstered further by the inclusion of several (three) choice deejay versions to further colour the picture. what's not to like? nothing! now!as with the others in the series, this has a unique, distinctive sound to the dubbing, and in this case, sounds more experimental in structure than 'space invaders', whilst remaining steadfastly bass-centric. scientist had a knack for obtaining the perfect bass tone, and, as with most dub, that is the story. the titles on disc 1 all make reference to the other albums in the series, ''world cup squad lick their wounds', 'vampire initiative', etc., either down to polite respect or merciless leg-pulling, one might suspect!the first track veers a long way away from eek a mouse's 'sensee party', brilliantly, but i might have thought it irresistible to use eek's vocals as samples, but no, and probably no matter either, as he does so on a later track anyway! despite the variety of the originals here, scientist pulls them all together to form a cohesive and complete picture, flawlessly. it all makes sense!disc 2, the source material, has no faults (any more :)), a trio from linval, two each from eek a mouse the meditations and the viceroys, and one by dennis brown, toyan undertaking two of the deejay cuts, and nicodemus, the other. exceptional stuff indicative of the quality music released by greensleeves at the time!so, safe to buy now (my copy came from amazon), and safe to say that this is a classic album from a stunning set. buy this or buy them all - no danger!

Manufacturing fault on disc 2, track 12 & 13 won't play
The one star review is for the quality control of this item NOT for the content. As previously advised by other buyers, there's an apparent manufacturing fault on track 12, disc 2. Fault results in track endlessly looping for 2-3 seconds & won't play past 2 minutes 14 seconds into track 12 or play track 13. So basically you can wipe the last two tracks of disc 2. Amazon & VP should be aware of this issue by now given the comments & feedback for this item. Oh yeah, forget about contacting VP directly as I contacted them several months ago about a missing poster from a fully-sealed vinyl edition of "Junjo Presents: Wins The World Cup" & just got an endless loop of silence....

Mastering problem sorted!
The second disc now plays fine, I'm pleased to report, but zero points to VP who did not reply when I asked them if the problem had been rectified. The dub disc is, for me, not quite as grabbing as the others in this series but is still fine music. The vocal disc is, however, superb.

Classic Scientist mixed dub LP and its vocal counterpart ruined by a manufacturing fault on CD#2 ....
I have no problem with the music comprising a classic Scientist mixed dub album on the 1st CD of this 2CD set. However the 2nd CD comprising the vocal sides of the dubs on the 1st CD (an excellent idea by the way) is unfortunately faulty on my copy. Towards the end of track 12 on CD#2 ('Linval Thompson - Holding Onto My Girlfriend') the song seemingly gets "trapped" in a locked groove which replays the same vocal line over and over and maddeningly this continues throughout the entirety [!!!] of the next track ('Nicodemus - Wife and Sweetheart') thus ruining the final two tracks. This is a great pity since if it was not for this fault this set would justify a 4-star recommendation but in its current form it musters a mere 2-stars (and I am being generous!)..... I have looked for the contact details of the record company VP/Greensleeves to report this issue but they amazingly don't appear to have an e-mail address! My original intention was to request a replacement for the faulty CD#2 but since this looks likely to be impossible I fear I will reluctantly have to contact amazon to request a return and refund. A great pity. Anyone else notice this fault? If not then I may consider returning and re-purchasing the item and hope that I am luckier 2nd time around.... however no point if everyone notices the same issue.UPDATE [19/06/2016]: After Amazon's excellent customer service sent me a second copy of this 2CD set, I can confirm that the fault on tracks' #12 & #13 of the 2nd CD is apparent on the replacement copy therefore confirming the feedback in the comments section of this review that this is a batch wide fault. Therefore I would reluctantly have to recommend not purchasing this item until the manufacturing fault has been resolved (by a junking of the existing batch of CD#2s, a full repress of the faulty CD#2 with the issue corrected and a recall and replacement of existing purchased faulty copies).
