Wonderful with Dirac Live, but no sound from any speaker at beginning.
As other reviewers mentioned, the receiver may have the issue which does not output sound to any speakers. I updated the firmware and has the same problem. Reset factory settings can resolve this. That is why it lose one star.It has included Dirac Live and upgradable bass control. With recommendated UMIK-1 microphone, it works great with noticable changes. Dirac has so many configurations you can play with, and initial impression is great experience so far and way more powerful than other tools e.g. Au.Sounds quality is wonderful. Just tip, if you have a good speaker and find the sound become dull when you enable Dirac, you can lower crossover to 35 or 30hz.

Hope It Works for You Out of the Box
Make no mistake, this is an excellent, outstanding receiver. When it works, that is.I bought this very pricey receiver because it supports the latest sound formats (Atmos), supports up to 8k video, and more importantly because of the full set of preamp outputs for all channels.I know sound equipment, I know what to do with it, the do's and don'ts. I am using this receiver exclusively as a preamp, no speakers connected to it. Instead, preamp outputs go to power amplifiers, which in turn drive speakers. All that said, this receiver out of the box had a fatally fatal flaw: there was no sound coming out of the speakers, none. Nothing from my Roku player, or my BD player, or my DVD player; the former two connected to each of the several HDMI inputs on the back. All I got out of this box was video.I tried every conceivable modification to the receiver settings (there are quite a few). I give the seller, Sound Advice, kudos, 5 stars for promptly replying to my requests for help and providing tips of what to do to get sound to work. Nothing worked, though No sound out of Roku, BD, DVD, FM, Chromecasting. Nada.in my view, setting up this receiver might not be for the average person. Indeed, I spent an entire day trying every conceivable change in the receiver settings to make it work. Nothing did.I filed a ticket with Pioneer about this. Pioneer's response pointed largely to either my interconnecting cables (high-end patch cables), high-end power amplifiers, and high-end speakers, all known very good as being the potential problems. Total, seemingly condescending nonsense. In the end, when all else fails...I ended up going to the settings and selecting a factory reset. Voila, sound restored and now appears to operate properly; different sound formats decoded just fine. Great feature for receiver that allows you to overlay on one corner of the video screen the sound information (type, sampling frequency, etc.).Once the sound issue was resolved, I proceeded to attempt the other most necessary thing: sound calibration for my audio room. Either calibration did not work (Dirac Live and full MCACC). The latter either would not start or else crash in the middle of the calibration process with a "Mic Error. Check microphone." Calibration mic that comes with the unit was perfectly fine, verified known good. I even tried the same trusty cal mic from my previous Pioneer receiver. Same problem, mic error.Left to do, I thought, was to disconnect power from this receiver and let is sit for a while. Came back a few hours later, powered it up, proceeded to do full MCACC calibration. Lo and behold, it worked just fine this time. Alarm bells have gone off in my head wondering if perhaps this might be a thermal issue with this receiver!have set up Wi-Fi connectivity, but I am now understandably afraid to perform the available firmware upgrade. If it isn't broken (for now), don't fix it!And that is my story with this very expensive receiver from that proverbial place. No other piece of audio equipment had ever given my any grief setting up, let alone having to waste an entire day troubleshooting what in the end should have worked flawlessly right out of the box once hooked up. And I did verify my connections at least five times.Fortunately, I have a window until January in which to return this equipment to Amazon. I will use this receiver as much as I can between now and then, and be at the ready to remove it, box it up, and send it back should it ever so much as show a slight video flicker.
