Q: Has anyone seen a curve for these and/or done a side by side comparison with an SM57?

Q: runs on batteries or a plug in wire?

It's a dynamic mic, meaning that it generates a a varying electrical voltage from the sound waves hitting it, without batteries or a power supply. (Basically the same as a speaker, used backwards to generate electricity from sound rather than sound from electricity.) You have to plug it in to transmit that electrical signal through wires.

Q: Is this good to use with an acoustic guitar just at home and does it have to be very close to the sound hole?

I have the wm58--which I would imagine is the same mic with different cosmetics. It was a steal for the price. Not a top elite microphone by any measure, yet it is eminently useable. I think you should be able to position the mic about 4--6 inches from the sound hole and get decent results. If you are using it for recording directly it should be fine. If you are using an amplifier, just be sure to watch your volume to avoid any feedback issues. Have fun and good luck!
