CLASSIC 1993 STEELY DAN BROADCAST, COMPLETELY REMASTERED Following the tumultuous albeit fruitful recording of their 1980 album Gaucho, and their subsequent breakup soon thereafter, the next decade was somewhat quiet for Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, the gifted musical duo behind Steely Dan. Despite a number of producer credits to their respective names, the only releases that appeared with either as featured artist were two Donald Fagen solo records. The first, The Nightfly, came out to rapturous critical and commercial success, going Platinum on both sides of the Atlantic. Meanwhile, Becker was listed as an as an official member of China Crisis on their 1985 album Flaunt the Imperfection. However the pair had reconciled their differences by the end of the 1980s with Becker playing on and producing Fagen s 1993 album Kamakiriad, which received praise from critics but failed the match its predecessor sales-wise. Following this semi-joint venture, Steely Dan reformed for a tour the same year. Becker and Fagen had retired from live performance in 1974 to concentrate on writing and recording, so their 93 jaunt was something of a treat and a rare opportunity for long term fans. One of the 30 dates performed in the US this time round took place at the 20,000-capacity Riverport Amphitheatre in Maryland Heights, Missouri on 1st September 1993. Featuring a rich mixture of Dan classics with a few solo cuts included too, this set, recorded for live FM broadcast, finds the group in superb form and is now featured in its fully remastered entirety on this double CD set.

The music quality of this Steely Dan's line-up surpasses the negative details
I love the music of Steely Dan, it’s my favourite band of all time. Being from Portugal (where S.D. fans are rare as far as I know) I’d never had a chance of seeing them live before but on the 29th October 2017 I managed to travel to London and attended their concert (unfortunately without Walter Becker who had passed away on September). Being on that concert was a gift that I got for my 60th birthday, and it was surely one of the happier days in my life.As far as this 2CD set is concerned, I agree with other reviewers the sound is not the best and it’s got some “scratches” and failures here and there, this one is worse obviously when comparing to “Alive in America”. But in my opinion the worst part of the set is the fact that the booklet inside does not mention the musicians that play with Becker and Fagen. I know Walter Becker does the introductions during the concert but that’s not enough for me, I even think on each track they should mention who’s making the solos too, just like on “Alive in America”.Nevertheless the band line-up playing on this 1993 event is Steely Dan’s best ever, in my opinion. Starting with Warren Bernhardt on piano, such good taste, Drew Zingg a hell of a guitar player and Peter Erskine one of the best jazz drummers in the world. Following on the saxes, three top players Cornelius Bumpus, Bob Sheppard and Chris Potter. Better than that only if you could have Michael Brecker, David Sanborn and Kirk Whalum… Anyway on this concert one can hear the high level of the solos mostly if you campare them to the recent line-up (that I saw in London) where the solos are much more pre-established, less improvised. That’s my opinion. Conclusion: the sound quality of this 2CD set is not very good but the music is awesome, beware the lack of credits on the booklet, for those who find that valuable. Despite these negative details, this is well worth it.

Alive in America - whilst the excellent CD you would expect from Steely Dan - was just too short. This 2CD set gives you a real appreciation as to how good that re-union tour was. If you like Steely Dan - you will love this album.

Just missed this - WHY!!!
Fantastic set from a great group we will never see together again. I'm still v v disappointed I missed this live as I had been in St Louis working for 3 months & the concert was the day before I was due to fly back to UK. Having now listened to the recording I'm gutted I didn't try to get tickets- anyway a great way to remember them.

a particularly bad one at 5
I'm on my second copy of this and it has audible glitches in the same 3 places on CD2 track 10, a particularly bad one at 5:18 to 5:22. There are a couple of minor dropouts as well. I'll live with it - if you get the same, don't bother with a replacement. The recording quality / music are good.

Epic
This is epic. Have loved alive in America for years but bought this to hear some of the tunes that were not on the other. It's so good.

Don't Bother
Whilst I think Steely Dan are the greatest band, this is an appallingly poorly recorded CD-set. You really need to ratchet up the volume. I'll stick to listening to the excellent "Citizen Steely Dan" career disc set, personally.

Wonderfully live.
Brings so much to the party, as it were. Best live. Wonderful in the studio. What's there not to like? This and 'Alive in America' prove their excellence.
