Full Metal Jacket
The training of the recruits to become marines fighting in Vietnam by the sergeant drill instructor, was superb. The battle scenes in the in the Vietnam war conflict were very well acted and demonstrated the commitment of the North Vietnamese to resist the Americans and their South Vietnamese allies.

Great Script and Authenticity
Since I am not a veteran I cannot vouch for authenticity. However this film has a very authentic feel. Highlights include Lee Ermey who plays the drill sergeant during marine training. He was an actual drill sergeant previously in the army. Most of his insults and brow beating was apparently ad-libbed, since Kubrick was happy to let him write his own lines. The marines are wonderfully obnoxious and immoral as when they arrive in 'Nam we see the lead (Pte Joker, Matthew Modine) and a buddy bartering for a prostitute.Perhaps a weaker part of the film is the continuity. It is almost like two different films spliced together. The first half including the amusing and surprisingly dramatic life of the marines as they train for war. This was Lee Ermey's debut as an actor and he is a natural. His insults and humor are superb and spontaneous. We also see the sensitive recruit, Pte Pyle struggling as a 'useless fatbody'. The relationship between Pyle and the lead (Pte Joker) is quite heart warming. Although that particular sub-plot does not have a good ending. The second part of the film is more centered around combat. After all what war film would be complete without some shooting. My favorite scene here is when the marines are tracking a Viet Cong sniper (who to the protagonists dismay starts racking up American kills). There are underlying themes regarding the duality of man. The troopers are one minute putting their lives at risk for a comrade but then the next are making jokes about an enemy soldiers corpse. For me the strongest part of the film was before we travel to Vietnam. However there are lots of great little sequences throughtout that will typical of Kubrick keep you awake and alert. The film is also not particularly long. Which can be seen as a positive in the sense of 'quality over quantity'.No matter how authentic the film is, it is very entertaining and a good appraisal of the typical testosterone filled young soldiers and their achievements and struggles. It is not in the top ten of all time but probably in the top ten of all war films. Worth a look at the least.

Fantastic quality, very rich extras, and also the italian dubbed version, which Kubrick defined one of the best ever made
Finally an excellent and complete blu ray edition: I bought it also because it includes italian audio and subs. In Italy we have a wonderful dubbing tradition and this is one of the best dubbed films ever. So, further than watching it in english (which is fantastic of course) I often love the italian version: even Kubrick congratulated for the quality and spirit of this dubbing, saying it was at the same level as the english version. This is so true for the characters of Drill Instructor Hartman and Jokers. The fist one was amazingly dubbed, to such a level of adherence to the actor, that, although him being extraordinary, his "italian voice" makes him even better.About the film, apart from the rich extras and quality of the blu ray, I don't know what to add: the more I watch it the more I think it is still and even greater. The good thing of Kubrick is that everytime you watch one of his films again, you realize and find out more details, layers and intuitions.

Best war movie ever made
Many Vietnam vets have said this movie is the most accurate Vietnam war movie ever made and I think it's one of the best war movies of all time. Stanley Kubrick directs, say no more. The Drill instructor in FMJ was an actual USMC D.I. They originally hired him as technical advisor but he convinced Kubrick to cast him in the drill instructor role originally meant for someone else. No actor could ever have done a better job and he's one of the best things about the movie, the dialogue is hilarious. The cast is superb as is the script and direction. Great for fans of war or action movies and anyone who likes quality artistic cinema. It's more than just another mindless action movie and with a Kubrick movie you expect deeper messages about war and humanity which of course you get. Great movie, one of my all time favourites and it's a classic.

GOT THE BLUE BALLS, CRABS AND THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH...
I thought I had the seven year itch after watching this, turned out to be potato chip crumbs in the couch cushion. Another classic from director Stanley Kubrick. You might have seen some of Kubrick's other films 2001: a Space Odyssey, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, Dr. Strangelove. Seems like people either love or hate Kubrick movies. Kubrick had a reputation for doing up to 30-40 takes per scene which pushed his shoots up to months and even over a year to the dismay of his actors. Some say he was trying to get the perfect lighting, the perfect scene delivery for the perfect end product, I think he probably just had a case of ocd (obsessive compulsive disorder). Full Metal Jacket is set during the Viet Nam war era and follows a group of new Marine recruits through basic training the first half of the movie then switches to Nam for the second half where we catch up with Private Joker (Mathew Modine) and Private Cowboy (Arliss Howard). Ronald Lee Ermey aka R Lee Ermey aka "the gunny" was probably the most memorable character of the movie. Ermey plays Senior Drill Instructor Gunnery Sgt. Hartman who is responsible for turning a group of raw recruits into certified killer Marines a role he did in real life while serving in the United States Marine Corps from 1961-1971. Ermey was initially hired as the films technical advisor but Kubrick was so impressed with him that he gave him the part of Sgt. Hartman. The Movie opens with Ermey taking control of his new recruits in the barracks using copious amounts of intimidation, colorful verbiage (lots of F bombs) and a smattering of physical abuse for the betterment of the recruits. Private Joker gets a jab to the solar plexus which drops him to the floor followed quickly by Private Pyle getting choked for not wiping that "stupid F*****g grin" off his face. Private Pyle (Vincent D'Onofrio) is the fat, slobby, slightly dimwitted new recruit who can't get anything right earning him the ire of Sgt. Hartman. At one point during inspection Hartman finds a jelly doughnut stashed in Pyle's footlocker. The entire platoon is punished while Pyle is forced to eat the doughnut which earns Pyle the ire of the rest of the platoon. I can't say any more without giving away some spoilers. Many FMJ commenters with former military service have said the basic training scenes of this movie are the most realistic of any army movie. If you're a big fan of R Lee Ermey you probably already have seen this movie but if you only know him from Mail Call on the History Channel or Gunny Time you would enjoy watching this. Like I said you either love or hate Kubrick movies and I'm on the fence with this one. The first half of the movie is very entertaining, the second half not so much but the whole package wasn't that bad. The Blu-ray has commentary with Ermey, D'Onofrio, Adam Baldwin and critic Jay Cocks. A 30 minute making of featurette Full Metal Jacket: Between Good and Evil and a theatrical trailer.

The best war movie ever made.”(これぞ史上最高の戦争映画だ)と評しました。 Joker, we're gonna have to put you up for the Congressional medal of
