Very helpful place to start
I want to retrain as an engineer at 40, but my maths is really rusty and this book laid it all out plain and simple. Colin (the author) has a lot of great tips for simplifying maths problems. This book assumes that you are a complete beginner at maths, then ramps up slowly in a way that won't destroy confidence.I really do find my maths has improved in my day to day problem solving in my head. Can't recommend it enough, and it's true, only smart people know that For Dummies are the best books to learn from!

Maths for dummies
I know I'm not stupid, I run my own business, have done for 40 years but numbers and arithmetic have always bothered me. I had a bullying teacher in school who thought it best to humiliate those who couldn't immediately grasp any maths so naturally I shied away from the subject. I did enough to pass any exams but maths was never my strong point and, it has bothered me all these years. My wife is a genealogist and calculates ages etc, using addition, subtraction and I envy her the ability to do so and, my new hobby of astronomy means I should get to grips with big numbers. I decided to go back to basics to deal with my number problem once and for all and decided to check out Amazon for something to help me and I found this book which is brilliant. Some of the things are different from what I remember but already I am feeling much more confident and I am actually enjoying the book, so much so that I'm going to tackle algebra next, As usual Amazon's supplier gave an excellent and speedy service.

Does everything that it sets out to do and more!
I have found this book very very helpful. I have been phobic about maths my entire life but have recently decided on a career change that will involve studying science at university level. I bought this book as maths was by far my weakest point, in fact I had to work right from scratch. This book takes you by the hand and leads the way, one baby step at a time, from the most basic of maths skills right up to things that I never imagined I would be able to do. Not only does it contain a huge amount of useful info presented in an easy to understand way but it even makes it enjoyable and very rewarding to work through.I have this book as well as "Basic Maths Practice Problems for Dummies" and "Numeracy Tests for Dummies" they all go hand in hand and between them have covered a massive proportion of what I needed to know. This book should be the first point of call for anybody who is looking to improve their maths.

Not really for me.
I didn't really do maths at senior school (early 1980s) for very long and boring reasons that I won't go into!! I bought this because I thought I should understand maths slightly more than I do (I'm actually more numerate than many of my work colleagues but things like area, volume, geometry, converting percentages to fractions are way outside of my repertoire). This book doesn't help. It spends ages banging on about preparing yourself mentally and not being afraid of maths - I'm not afraid, I just never learned. The rest of it is a bit too basic - there are very few pages that tell me something I don't already know how to do. I think it's aimed more at people that struggled with maths at school rather than those that just didn't do maths -I s'pose there aren't that many people that didn't do maths so there wouldn't really be a market for us. :)

Great.
Really good has got me thinking. Im really bad at maths really bad so bad I had trouble with it in school to the point the teachers thought I was joking when I seriously wasn't I feel extreamly dumb when it comes to maths yet I can understand physics, quite the combination. Brought this book in hopes of learning some of the good stuff and within a hour or so of reading I have. I have learnt a few new techniques and ways of thinking that have really helped. I love quizzes and this has challened my mind quite abit. Being 19 I have big ambitions and I'm quite paranoid I would never for fill them due to my lack of intellegnce in maths so wishing and hoping. this will lead to greater things. Would really advice this book to anyone. Weather it were to update your memory in maths or to learn in hope for better things brilliant.

Using humour to help us maths phobics...
I have awful flashbacks with regard to maths, and the shaming that went along with not being able to grasp some concepts. I'm hoping this book will help me to heal this little piece of my childhood, while allowing me to finally learn the mathematical tools I couldn't learn as a child.I was worried about the print size, as my eyesight isn't what it once was, but it seems okay. And the book is set out well, making it easy to follow. If it becomes too much of a strain on my eyes, I'll buy the kindle as well...Deep breath, as Colin Beveridge says, before diving in (or dipping a toe, in my case)...

Basic math for dummies is a great way to learn math
Basic math for dummies is a great way to learn math, especially since I have a hard time comprehending instructions from a tutor I have a better understanding by just reading this book and I don't have the pressure of a tutor getting frustrated with me because I don't understand what she is saying.
