Programming the TI-83 Plus/TI-84 Plus

This book can best be described as a minor stroke of instructional genius. Minor, only for the fact that the subject matter may be of lesser interest within the broad field of math and science education.Comparatively, Howard Anton's "Calculus With Analytic Geometry" can be considered major in this description. First published in the early 1980's Anton's textbook revolutionized the learning of the calculus as it made its mark on most high schools and colleges throughout the country. The commonality here is what is sometimes described as "the gift of clear statement."Do you remember those fat, black, QUE publications which were sold to software victims struggling to reach into the mind of Bill Gates? At 1000+ pages, these books had an almost magical way of saying and teaching absolutely nothing. Not only were the topics of discussion seemingly irrelevant, but the writing itself was wholly incompetent with missed steps and disjointed thoughts and concepts. At 326 pages, Chris Mitchell's TI-Basic programming guide offers the redemption for two+ decades of substandard instructional aids in computer science. And it has all to do with the gift of clear statement.Simply put, this author knows his subject well, he knows what must be discussed and iterated to teach his subject and share his knowledge, but most importantly, he knows how to write in clear statement. What's more, he actually has a wonderful writing style which very much takes the pain out of learning, what some might consider, a subject fit for pedantry. In more colloquial terms, - This ain't no book for dummies.Thank you, Chris Mitchell.Ron DiGiovanniEaston, PA

An Excellent Guide for Budding Programmers
If you have a TI-83 or TI-84 and have found yourself tinkering with programs on your calculator, then I highly recommend you get this book. The book is easy to read and you don't need to have any programming experience to get started. The author guides you through writing your own calculator programs with clear instructions for the TI-83 / TI-84 calculators. More importantly, the author ably explains the concepts so that you can write your own, unique programs. A teacher explained to me the "8-Queens" problem (sometimes called the n-queens problem, it is a fairly popular programming problem) in class one day and I thought my trusty TI could solve the problem. My initial program solved the problem in 80 minutes. Going back through this book, as a reference, I optimized my program and it was able to solve the problem in 22 minutes (for comparison, an 800mhz Pentium III can solve for 8-queens in under 1 second, but that is beside the point). The author is extremely knowledgeable about TI calculators and how to program them. If you're at this page considering buying this book, do it. This is the Texas Instruments programming book you have been looking for.

My recommendation on these topics.
Christopher is an authority on programming calculators from Texas Instruments. He writes for the beginners and for the advanced users. I've gotten a lot of interesting and useful knowledge about these wonderful equipment. And also I took ideas for programming the other great family of Texas Instruments, 89s, 92 Plus and Voyage 200.I really appreciate this purchase because the content is very useful to me and because I got two books for the same price, the printed one and the electronic one. Yes, if you buy the printed book, you get a code to download the ebook from the publisher, for use it permanently.

My introduction to programming in general
If you already know how to use the ti-83 and onward line of calculators then this is a great resource to learn how to introduce yourself to programming in an way that is not intimidating. I haven't programmed using the book yet, however have been able to follow the logic and ideas in the first two units. I think I will learn more by actually playing around with the programming examples. Being into math in general helps as you can see where the concepts could be very helpful in creating mathematical applications that can take more advantage of these calculators. This is "The" manual for learning how to program at this level.

The book is awesome, a must have book for programming.
This book is a must have if you're into programming BASIS TI. I myself was alittle worried that after teaching myself to program that I wouldn't get much out of it, but boy was I ever wrong. I've been reading the book from the very first page and have gotten to chapter 5 now. All I can say is there was soo much that I hadn't unlocked in the commands that I thought that I already knew. Getting the book has already raised my programming skill to a higher level and I haven't even finished yet. So again I say thank you Christopher Mitchell.

Absolutely Stunning
I already knew fairly well how to program the TI-83+ family before buying this book, but oh has my knowledge been expanded. With over 300 pages of awesomeness, he didn't miss a thing! Great for anyone wanting to learn how to program a TI-83+/84+, or who want to perfect their skills of TI-Basic!

Review of book
Hi,I am already experienced in general basic programming and thought this book would be good for me because it is specific to the ti83+/ti84+ calculators. However, I have found it to be very very basic and very slow on the uptake, I can hardly use as a reference even. If you have no prior programming experience then I'd say get this book but for somebody like me it takes about 10 minutes to flit through this book leaving me with an empty feelingCheersCommie

The book
Yes, good to have it with me. It could be condensed without losing a grain of it's true value and none of Mitch's humanism.
