C.P.E. Bach Edition

Some Heavenly Music Salvaged Out of the Depths of HellI cannot believe there yet remains a reviewer to comment on this box set, but here goes, anyway:The composer, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, was the second surviving of Johann Sebastian Bach's sons. Georg Philipp Telemann, Hamburg's own composer in residence was his godfather. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was known in his lifetime (before Felix Mendelssohn arranged the now more famous father's St. Matthew Passion's concert performance in its own centennial with the former's Gewandhaus Orchester right in Leipzig) as the "Great Bach" or Berlin Bach. His patron was Prussia's reknown, oftentimes infamously aggressive Fredrick the Great. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach wrote a substantial number of works for that monarch's own favorite instrument, the flute, like Haydn would write now neglected-recently resurrected baryton compositions for his own patron, the Hungarian Prince Nicholaus Esterhazy II.My own previous acquaintance in my somewhat extensive disc collection with Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was but a meager handful of about a dozen or so of his symphonies on three discs, not works on a large scale, but modeled in the period of music in which symphonies and overtures were used and composed interchangably, with the precedent example laid down in Mannheim with Sammartini. Most of the symphonies in this thirty disc collection are in three movements. This box exceeds all of my expectations here alone, not to mention six discs of concertos for several instruments, six of chamber music (Frederick's flute included), nine of keyboard music, and six discs of sacred music, traces hinting what might have been, had the whole output from the son remained with us, some of which touches the heights of the firmament reached so often by C. P. E.'s father, largely from his final Hamburg period. C. P. E. succeeded his famous godfather when the latter passed on.It was said that the total music composition output of Telemann exceeded that of both baroque composers J. S. Bach and G. F. Handel. It might even be said that the compositional output of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach might even have exceeded that of his now more famous father. But from having lived much of their lives, finishing them in Hamburg, a large body of works of both Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Telemann were destroyed, being in their own right, casualties of the Second World War. From what has survived among the relics and ruins, from Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, we have this collection of thirty discs to commemorate the three hundredth anniversary of his birth. Many of the works here are footnoted as being licensed from the Berlin Classics and Capriccio recording labels. Almost everything here is digitally recorded. Considering the length and breadth of the collection, as well as above average performances from a plethora of soloists and ensembles, I would give this my recommendation for purchase as a worthy addition for any serious classical collector's music library, and an unreserved five stars. I would point out that the keyboard music here is by no means complete (nor can this boxed set, priced at about $60.00, ever hope to be a complete composer's edition, under the WW II circumstances), and collectors more serious than myself might want to surplant their acquisition of this with a still much more pricey set: C.P.E. I have loved this set for over a month, playing one or two disks daily. It is some of the most joyous music I’ve ever heard. I am now on disc 51, but is scratched in places and skips, now won’t even start. Still have eight discs to go. A replacement would be nice, but at this price not expected.

This was one of Dave Hurwitz's 10 core box sets of classical music. My guess is that you get more great music for your money in this box set than any other. CPE was clearly a genius. I'm in the middle of the 27 discs of keyboard sonatas and the music just flows. It's creative, nimble, and engrossing stuff. Don't let the fact that you haven't heard of him dissuade you - I hadn't either. This is good stuff!

Why on earth would a manufacturer of cd's package the product in sleeves that are enveloped sealed and unusable once opened are beyond me. The recordings and music are a wonderful and welcomed edition, with good to great performances thus far, but why? My suggestion is to order up a non sealed package of cd envelopes at the same time you order the set, and make sure you get the plain envelopes without the gum seal and also not the clear plastics which don't fit in the box. This is the third set of cd's I've had this experience with from various companies, but again, why? Much enjoying the product otherwise. CPE does me...

This set is awesome! I cannot top the other reviews. Please, if you're thinking about getting this -- Get It Now. I've had this set for some time and decided to delve into it. My main main is Mozart (of which I have pretty much all that is available except the operas), but CPE is a very close second. I love music that you can feel and connect with. So often a smile just comes to my face with some unexpected turn in CPE's wonderful music. And to think, there are 30 cds. The sound is incredible as well as the performances. Enough said ...

After all of the help I received from John Van Note's reviews and comments, I purchased this set from Amazon and I must report that this set is a BRILLIANT CLASSIC from Brilliant Classics. The music in this collection is overall excellent from the production quality point of view. Equivalently, the sound quality of each disc excellent. Every track of all 30 discs ripped perfectly. Wonderful music from a composer - and a time period- historically underappreciated.

Ce coffret est une somme musicale inestimable qui permet de rétablir les faits quant au legs musical de la famille Bach.Il était communément admis que Jean-Sébastien représentait le sommet incontestable de son illustre famille.Ses enfants, particulièrement CPE, bénéficiaient du fait de composer selon les modes de l'époque. Ce qui contribua à releguer leur père aux oubliettes et à faire d'eux des compositeurs recherchés.Cette perspective est doublement fausse; d'une part, la musique de Jean-Sébastien est injustement oubliée jusqu'à Mendelssohn et, d'autre part, nous avons eu tendance à minimiser la contribution de CPE comme étant simplement une musique légère, au goût du jour.Rien n'est plus faux et ce coffret l'illustre parfaitement. CPE peut non seulement occuper une place centrale au sein de sa glorieuse famille, il se compare, du même souffle, avantageusement à Haydn ou Mozart. Même le jeune Beethoven l'admirait.Je recommande fortement ce coffret à quiconque est passionné de musique et d'histoire.

Quede decepcionado con esta colección,Esperaba mucho más de ella pero las grabaciones fueron aburridas y flojas, sin instrumentos originales por ejemplo la sonatas para viola da gamba no eran tocadas en dicho instrumento , si no en cello además muchas obras están repetidas (es más relleno que obras completas) y el empaque de los cd no es el mejor, son simples sobres de papel que se rompen con facilidad.En verdad quede decepcionado.Recomiendo más la edición de Brilliant Classics

At less than £1 per disc this is an incredible value and incredibly valuable box set. CPE Bach has been overshadowed by his father JS but was in fact more famous than him in his day so to have his complete works in one box is fantastic. Worth the asking price for the first 26 discs of his solo piano works alone.The outer box appears sturdy and well designed. The inner packaging and reading material is very basic as you’d expect at this price and care needs to be taken when opening the sealed CD wallets. The music however on first impressions is far from budget. Well recorded and well performed.A must buy for collectors and fans of this period.
