Q: I understand power is supplied by batteries or the included power adapter. Can power be supplied by the usb cable as well?

No. Period. The function of the usb cable is to provide a charging port for your phone, tablet, etc. This is an output only. The main unit can be powered by battery or a supplied adaptor; to operate the three levels of brightness of the display, you need the adapter plugged in, which really doesn't go well with wall mounting.

Q: I can't find the low battery indicator. The location is not where the manual states. I can not see it on the pic supplied either. Any help please?

The low battery indicator is located in the outside humidity pane just under the percent sign. It is the shape of a battery and shows how mush charge remains on the battery. It may not show if the battery is fully charged.
