Great and more discriminating than Fritz
I'm a long time user of Fritz which is quite good as a trainer and devastating in Blitz mode. This is much the same but faster. In training mode you can retake a move but it will reflect in your handicap in the sense that the more unrecoverable the mistake the worse your handicap especially if the game results in a draw. Scoring is thus more sensitive than Fritz. It's in Blitz mode where the parallel processing really shines. Say you're good enough to draw Fritz most of the time in Blitz. In Houdini you'll lose ALL the time for quite a while until the training is firm in your subconscious mind. Though I'm a dabbler and more interested in the power of the software, I think if you're a competitive player you should definitely have this. Processor-wise an Intel Core i7 quad core of 2.8 Ghz is recommended but I've also played it with a 2.4 and didn't notice any difference. These were both gamer's laptops.

Insanely powerful
I would recommend this only to people who are familiar with Fritz and feel that Fritz 13 is not powerful enough :)This is one serious computer chess engine and will have you working and thinking harder than ever.If you need something really intense and challenging to sharpen your game, go no further, very , very powerful. Now for those not familiar with Chessbase products, you can get video CD's as well and they interface perfectly with the UI. in this way as the teacher narrates the game play, you see it in real time before you. Then there is the online connection you have with their database server, the CheesBase website and worldwide web chess community.I would also recommend that you look up the users manual to learn of all the multiplicity of features this game has , from training, end game , defensive chess, openings and also playing live online as well as kibitzing live chess games. If you don't mind losing and are willing to learn and apply yourself, then for it, its the best there is out there.Recommended for Intermediate to Advanced playersMy only gripe about Fritz 13 and Houdini 3 is that when playing in 3D mode, it makes my graphics card get too hot, this only happens on Windows 7/8 not on Vista or XP, not sure why, but they need to work that one out.
