I didn't receive any mounting bolts are they sold separtely?

No bolts included. I mounted mine on a 2x6, using a big washer and screw.  Then you can easily mount the board wherever you like And move it if necessary without having to remove the water trough from its mounting.

What's best to use for mounting on side of chain link fence, lag bolts or the "U" bolts and what size is recommended?

I would use two 1 inch by 6 inch by 12 inch long board and two galvanized bolts. I would use 4 inch long bolts of either 1/4 or 3/8 diameter with a flat washer and nut. Drill your holes through the two boards and sandwich the chain link fence between them.

This is a decent waterer. Our large horses will drink from it, but a three or four gallon waterer is more sufficient. This one works great for mini horses, dogs, goats, chickens, etc. Just mount it low so your smallest animal can get to it.

How do I mount this to a gate?

Not knowing what type of Gate you want to mount it too, makes it a little difficult to respond to that questionHowever, if it is a cattle gate or any gate, you would need to cut some treated lumber (size as required) and bolt this lumber to the gate supports with some galvanized coated and or stainless steel Bolts, nuts and lock washers. Then bolt the Waterer to this Lumber. Depending on the application, you may be able to use longer bolts and bolt through the Waterer  and wood support and through the gate support with one bolt to secure the waterer and the wood support in one shot to the Gate supportNaturally I feel you would want to connect a flexible hose to the waterer from your water source, because I assume this gate will be utilized, therefore allowing the gate to open and close freelyYou may want to insulate and also protect the hose, depending on how cold your climate is in your areaFYI, These green PVC type automatic waters are the best on the market, compared to the painted and or galvanize waterers. That is my opinionHope this helpsGod Bless!If you are in a cold climate than use those Richie Waterers, they are insulated and made for that environment but of course not cheap!
