The breaker detects surge amps. Lets use a 20 amp breaker for example. A motor may operate at 15 amps, however to get it started it needs a bit of a kick, or in-rush current. That could be, depending on motor size, a few hundred amps, but only instantaneously. In some cases motors have capacitors to supplement that initial kick and take load off the supply circuit. So this breaker trips on an in-rush of 250 amps and has a working rating of 50 amps.

From positive terminal of the battery install a battery shut off switch. Next install the breaker followed by the connection to the positive 12v terminal of your inverter.
