My gas valve has a 1/4" square shaft. Most of the gas valve keys sold are "universal", where the universal keys contain a 1/4" and a 5/16" keyway. After buying a "universal" key, I do not recommend using a universal key, as it only engages the tip of the shaft. Then I bought this true 1/4" key instead. Highly recommend as this 1/4" key engages much more of the gas valve shaft.

Most of the fireplace shut off valve keys are dual 5/16" and 1/4". This made the head a little too large to fit into my 1/4" shut off valve. Most of the valve keys offered are the dual, which won't work in my application.

This lasted about 2 weeks then the head broke off from turning it. Needs to be made of better material.

This 1/4" key was too small to fit my Hearthmaster valve for my home's gas fireplace. I got a  dual-size key  that fits both 1/4" and 5/16" and that one works fine.Either measure your valve before buying this or get a dual-size key. If you have a  1/4" drive sock extender , you can use that to check sizing (using the square hole end) before ordering this. My 1/4" extender doesn't fit, and my 3/8" extender is too large, thus my gas valve size is 5/16". There are a few valves out there larger than 5/16" but those are rare.Our old key was universal and worked well on our Hearthmaster fireplace valve for 20 years before it got lost. We only use the key a few times per year, primarily starting up the fireplace in the fall and shutting it down in the spring.

Should have listened to the other reviewers. This is a 1/4" valve key, no tapered sides inside the socket to make it universal. I have 5/16" and I needed to swap for one that has the tapered opening to make it 5/16" compatible.

It says it's "universal" but it doesn't fit my natural gas fireplace. The last key I bought (years ago), I just bought the one they had at the Home Depot so it wasn't anything special. I guess this goes back.

I would of loved this but this simply did not fit. Make sure you don’t have one from the 80s as this was simply to small to grasp the handle.
