Ruins dating back thousands of years reveal engineering skill that surpasses even our most modern technological capabilities. Religious texts from diverse, ancient cultures tell incredibly similar stories of gods descending from the heavens in fiery crafts. Ancient rock art depicts figures that resemble modern-day astronauts. And mysterious monoliths, many placed in alignment with heavenly constellations dot the landscapes of nearly every continent. In his 1968 book, Chariots of the Gods, Swiss author Erich von Däniken proposed that all of this evidence pointed to a profound but logical possibility: extraterrestrials visited Earth in the distant past and changed the course of human history. This concept, later known as ancient astronaut theory is today embraced by literally millions of people around the world. The central focus of this theory is to ask questions and propose possible answers regarding the vast amount of evidence about humanity's prehistoric past and origins, evidence that mainstream science cannot (or will not) provide satisfactory answers. Across the Earth, ancient ruins and megalithic structures such as Sacsayhuamán in Peru, the Temple of Jupiter in Lebanon, or Gobekli Tepe in Turkey are proven to be far older than what our modern history books are willing to admit. In fact, the incredible megalithic site of Gobekli Tepe, located in the Southeastern Anatolia Region of Turkey, has been radiocarbon dated to be over 11,000 years old. Meanwhile, further to the west in Baalbek, Lebanon, the ancient city of Heliopolis and the Temple of Jupiter contain enormous stone blocks that are in excess of 1,000 tons each. Yet at the same time, most mainstream experts will tell you that these megalithic sites were built less than 5,000 years ago by the Romans, or some nomadic hunter-gatherer group, using nothing more than bronze-age tools. This evidence greatly contradicts what society has been taught about the timeline of human history and helps to paint a far different picture of our past. The most important question is, why isn’t this important information part of our education system? As the book and the Ancient Aliens television program makes clear the Ancient Astronaut Theory is a step towards initiating a critical dialogue about humanity real past and origin, discussions that are critical to charting the future course of our civilizations. If asked, do I believe the Ancient Astronaut Theory, my answer is, I don't know, but I do want honest answers, whatever they might be, regarding the mysteries of human history and human origins. Personally, I am convinced that there was a much earlier advanced human civilization that existed prior to the Ice Age (Approximately 10,000 BC) that was destroyed by a world-wide catastrophe such as a comet strike, that is remembered in myths as the Flood. Whatever the case, Aliens, catastrophe, or something else that accounts for all of the Ancient worlds mysteries, its important that modern humanity discover the answer. Further, programs such as Ancient Aliens may encourage popular support to drive mainstream science and/or religion to provide "honest" answers. I recommend this book to all readers that can maintain an open mind.

The past eats civilizations and their crumbs are a few surviving books and the ruins of architectural giants. We posit in base of that evidence a story in the hope that the lost forever pieces are going to fit with time in the shape of its absence. Nevertheless parts of those books and technologies remain a mystery in its nature. So the importance of this book: it takes those strange parts of our history and tries to create a logical unity among them. Of course as Chesterton would say, through Father Brown, we can make ten logical explanations about the universe and be wrong in all of them. I don't know if the theory of the ancient aliens is right, it could be totally right, partially right, or totally wrong; but I appreciate there is an effort to explain our past from the times humanity started to develop culture till the secret story of our recent present.I liked very much the essay by Erich Von Dänniken. It is amazing that his work has directly inspired spatial technology. Giorgio Tsoukaulos, in the theme of Puma Punku has given me interesting clues, I am an architect and Puma Punku is accessible to me and I consider his questions about the work in stone quite appropriate and the search for answers is going to improve our understanding of our past. Also the essays by Nick Pope and Linda Moulton Howe are quite illustrative about our close past. In general the essays in this book compel the reader to read and investigate more about places, events and myths.If I should criticize the book perhaps it would be the photographic material: they are wonderful photographs but are from stock images, certainly the authors are not photographers but perhaps it would be a plus if we could see them in situ in the places they narrate so well. I have to admit that some interpretations of the bible in a couple of essays seemed to me to not have much or directly no evidence to support the claims, so to me they would be a bit foreign to the nature of the book. All in all I enjoyed quite much the reading of this book.

Great book, info, pictures, photos, diagrams and writing. Stands on its own for reading even if one has not followed the tv documentary.If you do follow the tv show as I do, its a perfect reference / resource for many of the episodes and info covered and more !

I absolutely loved the book just as much as I love the series on tv.The photos were the best as was each explanation or documentary writing.For me the book is a combination of reference and reading about what I enjoy and believe in.If you love or enjoy the series you will love the book!
