I found this converter easy to use, and the audio quality of the converted recordings was good
I have 5 foreign language training cassettes that I've been wanting to convert to mp3 files. I've had these tapes for almost 15 years, and I wanted to listen to them to brush up on my Portuguese language skills. I looked into having them converted professionally, but it was too expensive. I researched various converters on Amazon and chose this one because (a) it promised to convert files directly on to a jump drive and (b) it could be powered via USB cable. I didn't want to deal with conversion software on a computer, and I thought using consistent power via USB would make better recordings. This converter did exactly what I wanted it to do. I found the directions to be pretty clear, with helpful diagrams. If you are converting music tapes, you can set it so that it creates a file for each individual song (the machine knows that silence indicates a new song coming), or you can set it so that you create one large file for the entire tape. For the language tapes, I created one file for each tape--otherwise, the moments of silence on the language tapes would create a large number of small files (I learned this after converting my first tape--it created nearly 100 small files!--so I reset the converter to make one large file). I suggest converting one tape, listen to it, then adjust accordingly, if needed, for more tapes. I found the audio quality of the mp3 files I created was fine. Some reviewers have said it's cheaply made. I suppose it is, but it was fine for what I needed it for. And, in my opinion, the price was reasonable. I'm not sure how it would do with daily use and handling.

Bad audio quality, audio dropouts
I accidentally ordered this after ordering, and returning, a clone of this recorder. There are several identical recorders with different logos on the case, but all with the same overall shape and pattern of buttons on the back and supporting auto-reverse playback and recording MP3 to a thumb drive.I ordered a different one of these - found that the audio quality was bad (lots of noise) and occasionally skipped a few seconds. So I returned it, and intended to buy a different audio recorder but somehow bought this one which was a clone of the one I'd returned.Let me first say that the concept of this product is great. It is easy to insert audio tapes into the unit -- I have another cassette/MP3 recorder where this is an incredibly finicky task. And, because it supports auto-reverse it means you can record both sides of a tape without having to manually flip it over. And, because it reports MP3 direct to USB flash drive you don't have to crank up Audacity. The problems with this recorder are two-fold, and I've already named them. There is a lot of hiss in the audio. In my case I have lots of lectures on tape, so the hiss isn't a big deal. If I'd invested in a slew of music tapes back in the day I'd be more upset at the audio quality. The killer is that the recorded audio (MP3 onto flash drive) has lots of skipped audio. Meaning that - the audio suddenly jumps forward a few seconds. There isn't a gap with blank sound, but a skip forward. This was unacceptable.I checked audio playback itself using headphones on the tape player, and there are no skips/jumps with simple audio playback.I'd have been returning this unit like I did the other but I have developed a workaround. I should not have to take this workaround, hence the 2-star rating.Namely I have a USB-audio interface (Griffin iMic). I plugged that into my computer, and used an audio cable between the headphones output on the recorder to go to the input on the iMic. And, I set the iMic to record "Microphone" rather than "Line". Then, I launched an audio recorder app on my computer -- most definitely did not launch Audacity, but instead the "Simple Recorder" app from the Mac app store.Result - no skips/jumps recording it this way versus the direct-to-flash-drive method. Still lots of hiss, but as I said I'm okay with that.

Books on Tape
Borrowed some old fashioned books on tape from a friend. Bought this to listen to them in my Jeep (no cassette, not even a CD player!!). I like that it can record to MP3 while I listen. Occasional stutters(not sure how else to describe) in playback - can't be certain if they are due to the player or the tape in it. Haven't listened to the MP3s yet to see how bad the stutter comes across in the recording. On the whole I am quite happy to be able to listen to these gems on tape.

Works, sort of
It works but needs better instruction manual. And the setting to allow you to jump ahead a song or so, does not work and I checked my settings several times. Do not try to change cassettes and insert second one for the same flash drive to use all the space -- really does not work. Have to use a drive for every side on the tape. And no need to get the large capacity drives, smallest amount is best.

Maybe I will be glad to have it
Just received it. No clue where I was supposed to insert the AA batteries (answer: battery compartment is under where the audio cassette is inserted). Didn't realize that I would have to get a SIM card for some reason. Maybe I will be glad to have it, maybe not. Plans: I am going to use your audio cassette player to copy the old, thin UDC-89 cassettes onto CD using the Spin-It-Again program.

Very meh
Its an ok cassette player. After receiving this in the mail i realized i wanted a vintage player so i only use this to convert my old tapes into mp3s which is ok. When it converts the tape it makes 1 big mp3 file so you have to manually split the songs with a program like audacity.

Began falling apart, stopped working altogether after 15 tapes
Converted about 15 tapes but the unit started breaking down after just a few. First the FF button didn't work, then the components inside became loose and eventually it stopped working altogether. I'll have to purchase another unit from different company to finish my project. I wasn't expecting a super high quality unit for the price but I have about 40 tapes and am bummed it didn't last just a little longer. Other reviews are correct: cheap plastic and quality. Other units on Amazon appear to be same thing with 5 stars, buy one of those, not this unit

Sound Quality
Nice compact device but the sound volume and quality are substandard. I can suppose that if the sound were fed into an amplifier the volume could be increased but the quality would still be an issue. Unfortunately I cannot recommend this in good conscience.
