So aggravated! The picture of the elf sitting on the book is NOT that one you will receive. You will get the new version with the round face which is NOT the one you or I are looking for.

Q: would this make a good christmas gift for an 8 year old girl? or is it something to be opened before christmas? and is it for younger kids?

It would make a Thanksgiving gift because they come in Thanksgiving.It is for ages 3 to 13 and my kid is 11 and he loves it. it is not younger for kids

The box u see n the picture that says elf on the shelf....that is the box the elf is n. It is a sturdy box that we store ours n year to year.

Q: Is the book different for the girl elf than the boy elf or are the books the same?

The content is identical, but the elf character is gender specific in each book. Illustration are boy elf in boy book, and girl elf in girl book.
