Q: Why there was a strong smell ?

Probably just the chemicals used to make the foam or dyes used. If it’s really bad, I’d exchange it and/or let them sit out a day or two before use. Sometimes items are shipped with other things in the plane, or truck that cause many other items in there to absorb the smell. Happens frequently because thousands of items are shipped together all over the world/country & some carry strong smells that affect anything else that is able to absorb scents (even when they’re well packaged & sealed).
