I was a little nervous about ordering this set, as Amazon said it was a frequently returned item.I don't know what the reason for that could be, but the set I received is flawless.It is solid wood throughout, and the playing surface is made up of individual squares of wood veneer (some boards I have seen just have a single piece of wood with dyed or painted squares).Mine is the 7x7 model, and is kept closed by magnets rather than a metal latch. I think this is better, since it gives a cleaner look, and the magnets are plenty strong enough to keep it closed.The overall quality of workmanship is excellent, with smooth transitions between the two halves of the board in both open and closed positions.The chessmen themselves are very nicely made considering their small size. They are satisfyingly proportioned and easy to tell apart from each other.The magnets felt a little weak at first, but they proved to be strong enough to hold even the heavier pieces in place, even when the board was held sideways or inverted. Stronger magnets may actually be a bad thing, because it might cause the pieces to be attracted to one another and cause problems.All in all, I don't have a single bad thing to say about this set. It's an absolute bargain for the price, and I'm thinking of buying some of the other sizes. It would make an excellent gift.

I got the 10". I love it. It's adorable, and well made. I like how all the pieces fit inside, in their own spot, and the board folds shut with a magnet instead of clasps...it's a very strong magnet. The magnets on the board/pieces don't seem to be super strong - but they serve their purpose. I'm super happy with this purchase.

I purchased 10, 12, 14 & 16 inch boards to see which I liked the most.I ended up keeping the 14x14 and returning the rest. I purchased this to have a travel set that I could bring with me to set up at coffee shops or parks to play with friends. I found the 14x14 to be the best in terms of compactness and ability to travel with while also maintaining some integrity of what a real chess board and pieces should feel like. I really love the packing of the pieces within the foam under the board. Other sets I found the pieces would not actually sit in their molding and would become damaged while transporting.The board itself looks beautiful with a nice gloss finish and the pieces are a nice wood that don’t seem cheap. Honestly was very impressed overall with the quality of it especially for a travel set.Something to note is all sizes 12x12 and under do not have a latch on the side for the pieces. I didn’t keep these sizes long enough to see if this would be a problem but 14 & 16 inch models do have that latch. Moving down from 14 to 12 the pieces are noticeable smaller. Would be nice for really tight spaces but I’ve found that even smaller coffee tables are able to for the 14inch model.Don’t think you can go wrong with any of these options just wanted to give the feedback having bought all of them.

The set is absolutely gorgeous. The wood has been finished perfectly and I love how the pieces nestle perfectly into the cut foam. The pieces are magnetized just enough to keep them from moving around from casual jostling, which is a good thing because...The set is wobbly. It's not level and tilts back and forth. When I open the case and look at it from the side, the board has a definite curve to it.The set is so beautiful, it's a shame that it doesn't lay properly flat. It's not a huge deal and won't stop me from using it, but it is mildly annoying that the board rocks back and forth every time you move a piece.I would be on the fence about returning it, but I threw away the packaging before noticing the flaw, so the choice I guess is made for me and I'll be keeping it.

This chess set is beautifully made. I love the magnetic bottoms to if the board is bumped the pieces do not move. The storage for the pieces is a wonderful feature.

Great quality product, portable. The board is a foldable wooden case, detail pieces with magnets so they stick to the board. This is great value for the money.

This thing has been everywhere with us - the park, the beach, friends homes...the list goes on. The finish on the board and pieces looks great and has held up well for over a year. The pieces are magnetic enough to hold up to jostling but not so much that they are difficult to move. Great set if you have cats who like to randomly be involved - also great to leave out and play a game over an extended period of time as everything will stay in place.
