Very Good, but Incomplete Info on Heat Pumps and their Peak Power Implications
One of the very important issues regarding Electrification of HVAC via Heat Pumps is the significant increase in electricity they require at both the cold and hot seasonal extremes. As we transition to RE100, the Summer peak will not be a significant challenge due to power from the large amount of Solar PV that will be on the grid -- PV produces more electricity in Summer when the Heat Pumps demand power for cooling. But the Winter peak is a completely different story when Solar output is at its minimum. As we transition from fossil heat to Heat Pumps, it is essential that Air Source Heat Pumps are discouraged in all but very moderate climates because they produce a peak power demand that cannot be met without fossil "peaker" power plants. In the Winter, Air Source Heat Pumps become extremely inefficient at low temperatures with COP's way below 2.0 and largely require COP=1.0 Electric Strip Heat which will block RE100. Ground Source Heat Pumps which use the always moderate temperature "ground" as their thermal source have Winter COP's over 4.0 and are the ONLY way we will fully make the RE100 transition economically ... or even at all outside the tropics. Utilities are just now starting to understand this issue as more and more Air Source Heat Pumps are brought online. It is unfortunate this critical "system transition" matter is not discussed in Jacobson's otherwise very good overview of the RE100 transition challenge. We strongly hope the author will consider further works illuminating this critical aspect of successful RE100 transition.

Clear and Comprehensive
Thousands of cities, corporations, states, and nations have announced plans to be zero-carbon. A few have already achieved being carbon neutral. Dr. Jacobson’s text book details the wind, water, and solar (WWS) solutions. Supporting infrastructure is also discussed such as storage in many forms, advanced grids, microgrids, and green hydrogen. Renewable energy and electrifying everything are in high growth for all the reasons outlined in this wonderful book. From sustainability executives to engineers to university students this is an invaluable text and reference book. 100% Clean, Renewable Energy and Storage for Everything is clear and comprehensive.

Textbook Example of Confirmation Bias
Yes, it's a textbook example of confirmation bias that's an actual textbook. Mark Jacobson has an agenda that he incorporates into his textbook and there's nothing wrong with that. As textbooks go, it's very clearly written and Jacobson makes very effective use of 2 and 3 letter acronyms such as BE (Battery Electric) and HFC (Hydrogen Fuel Cell). The Amazon Look Inside feature includes his index, which shows this book to be a comprehensive compendium of all his arguments for renewable energy and against nuclear.Among a lot of scientists, engineers and just people interested in energy like me, he has elicited considerable skepticism. He takes a rather broad view from the top and amasses details to support it. Whether through confirmation bias or just because this is such a large topic that no one can get all the details, he misses a lot of stuff at the nuts and bolts level. The Look Inside feature includes an excellent example of one of his more fanciful proposals -- cryogenic hydrogen for long haul aircraft. He has a table where he conceptually constructs and compares a 747-8 aircraft with an HFC powered equivalent. He points out that the space shuttle and most space rockets use cryogenic hydrogen. He overlooks the difficulties in storing hydrogen. It is notoriously leaky and embrittles metals. It also spontaneously combusts easily. These rockets are used very few times. The hydrogen tanks for the space shuttle were not reused like the solid rocket boosters. He points out a Soviet experimental Tupolev TU-154B that had a third engine that burned hydrogen from a refrigerated tank. This was actually used only five times before it was converted to natural gas. He's proposing fuel cells instead of burning, so there's undoubtedly a lot of devil hiding in the details and throughout the rest of his textbook.

Comprehensive, inspiring, factual
Does the reality of climate change bother you more or the fact that you are unsure if going 100% renewable is an unsolved challenge?Mark Jacobson’s brilliance shines in this expectedly authorative masterpiece, the 100% Clean, Renewable Energy and Storage for Everything. The book is intended to be a textbook, yet I recommend it as an intriguing must read for any renewable energy industry professional and for those who are passionate about contributing to the future of energy transition beyond fossil fuels. This comprehensive work is to guide the curious reader through the scientific facts with mind-blowing thorough references, to understand why immediate actions are necessary and how those can be achieved on a consolidated global scale. The vivid detailing language and the relevant illustrative photos instantly transported me into a deep feel of empowerment that there is a plan to work towards to averting the climate crash.

Solar, wind, large-scale storage, and nuclear energy is “the solution” to global warming by 2030.
This is a good textbook for an introductory energy course with clear illustrations, not an easy read on an airplane.Jacobson chooses water over nuclear energy. He says, “Conventional hydropower dams require a reservoir behind them.” I agree with this, all the dams I have seen have water on the backside. But a picture of the California Folsom Dam without water on either side tells the climate story. Hydropower is not resilient; floods and droughts make 1950’s energy solutions obsolete.Jacobson really likes water. He mentions the China Three Gorges dam. This is the second-largest dam in the world, 7,661 ft long, the poster child of dumb engineering. If you want the latest strategies for decarbonization of electricity, forget this book. It does not provide the solution.
