Soft Lad [Import anglais]

Powerful and evocative, "Soft Lad" tells a difficult story with depth and honesty.
"Soft Lad" is a great film. A story about Davey, a 22 year-old aspiring dancer who has been having an two-affair with his brother-in-law Jules. Davey's older sister, Jane, Jules's wife has no idea. Jules, selfish and controlling, tries to keep Davey to himself. Davey realizes how badly he's behaved and turns from Jules. Davey meets Sam, and when he sees how everyone isn't a power-freak like Jules, begins a loving relationship with Sam. What could possibly go wrong?A few months into his relationship with Sam, Davey is given some really bad news regarding his health. All of the secrets and lies come rushing to the surface and that's when everyone's life changes drastically. The acting throughout is excellent, especially Davey and Jane, as characters who have always had a close relationship. The steady tension leading up to the confrontation among the group is completely believable. The various reactions are heart-wrenching. The direction is meticulous but there are spontaneous moments that feel like real emotions we can all identify with. The script is intelligent and truthful and never ventures into melodrama. These characters sound like people we all know, who try to be honest without causing pain. Unfortunately, because they are honest, the truth always comes out and someone always gets hurt. The soundtrack is great and the background songs fit the action as it happens. Good photography and production values throughout.I give "Soft Lad" five stars because of the complex storyline, and the mature, skillful way it is presented. In a bigger world, I could see this movie as a vehicle for A-List actors. But it is what it is, and it's a wonderfully constructed and thought-provoking film for those who are looking for a little extra from the genre.

Low budget but actually rather good
The acting and story generally overshadow weaker moments. I enjoyed it more than many other gay movies, to be honest. Most are just campy or tragic... this one doesn't feel like either. Which is good.

Potential
The acting in the film is actually not all that bad. The ending of the film falls apart, mostly because of bad directing and incoherent camera work. The soundtrack is often generic sounding, although there are a couple good tracks throughout.

It happens more than it should.
I hope my title doesn't sound negative to anyone. It is a very good movie and perhaps true to life in the negative reactions and the abusive behaviors. I hope it teaches and enlightens. Be kind to all you meet, they fight the hard battle also.

Wow. A must see. It's not fluff and definitely not about a "soft lad" in the American sense.
I can not imagine a movie closer to real life than this. It must be based upon a real story. No one could have written this without intimately being aware of the real life story. The dialogue is suburb. The acting is extraordinary, The cinematography spot one, and the music that accompanies the movie is perfect ion every way.As the credits rolled, I took a deep breath. I do not know how long I had been transfixed by the movie, but it was easily for the final fifteen minutes that I must have been too preoccupied to take a deep breath.I am certain that I will remember the mother's voice on the phone saying, "come home," for a long time. The words ached. Those words followed a while later buy, "Now if you don't mind, soft lad, I've things to do." WOW

boring and predictable
boring and little to do with dance, and the attraction makes no sense and main people have little morals

Twisted and over dramatic
It is a sad story of selfishness, lust, lies, and, worst of all, the transgression of boundaries. Some mistakes should be kept locked up forever; no need to share them. That is their punishment, and you may find atonement.

Soft? Far from it.
Soft Lad has a lot going for it, including a fantastic cast who give it their all.Daniel Brocklebank is a convincing villain, and Jonny Labey a cute romantic lead. But kudos to Craig Stein and Suzanne Collins, who dazzle in their supporting roles. Stein is mesmerising, as is Collins. I'd pay to watch either of them read aloud from a bus timetable.Writer and director Leon Lopez (sidebar: he's incredibly sexy. Google him) originally wrote this as a play, and at times it feels like one (hardly a bad thing, in my book). His film is surprising, charming, sometimes shocking, and overall a highly rewarding watch. This isn't a new story, but in his hands it feel like one. I can't wait to see what he does next. The DVD also contains a short film by Lopez - The Definition of Loneliness - a sweet, thoughtful piece which alone is worth the price of the disc, and a fascinating interview with the gorgeous Lopez and the equally yummy Stein.

A relevant modern tale
A touching tale of love, hopes and betrayal. The family connections makes this a poignant and modern tale that explores relationships within the family. HIdden desires false identities - the characters are complex and move in choreographed moves avoiding the real issues, trying to maintain a facade that eventually falls to pieces, changing their lives forever. The exploration of sexuality, identity and fulfilling destiny make this a relevant touching story. I found the whole thing gripping, was fascinated by the characters and their journeys. The central character discovers that true love walks a different from what the one he is on, honesty and intimacy replacing lies and deception. The warning of the story is that betrayal has a price, destroying all who get swept along in its wake. A timely reminder that AIDS/HIV are still relevant topics.

Emotionally charged gay drama based in Liverpool
**May contain plot spoilers**The term ‘soft lad’ is a term of affection in Liverpool meaning nice and harmless, and here this references David who is an aspiring dancer who is in love with an older man and that man is married to someone very close to him.The relationship though is stalling as it seems to be based on need and desire and so David has to make some changes – the problem is things have already been set in motion that are going to dictate how everyone behaves and will have lasting and damaging repercussions for all involved. This is a rather good film, Daniel Brocklebank is as ever very reliable in his role of the duplicitous husband, but show stealer for me is Suzanne Collins who is a joy to watch. Once again another example of a very well made and acted British Independent film.

Disappointing
The acting was so so. The actors who played the husband and the new boyfriend were pretty good. However the lead actor was a little unconvincing. All t he emotions from A to B. The actor who played the sister was not good at all. You could actually she her turning the appropraite emotion on. She looked like she had not acting on film before. Her's was very much a theatre delivery. The direction was also a bit plodding and there seemed to be no connection between the lead and his brother-in-law. Why either would have fallen for the other is beyond me. Could be the the brother-in-law's role was very stereotype. Heartless bastard with no redeeming features.
