Q: Is there an API for controlling these from other apps?

No it is just Bluetooth from the tether cell app. When that works. Which is sadly spotty.

Q: I don't understand how this product works... AAA and AA batteries are rated for different amperage output. how do you account for this?

Yes, a good quality AAA battery has about 1/2 to 1/3 the capacity of a AA battery. As a result, the AAA battery will run down first. Tethercell will cut off the circuit if the AAA battery discharges to such an extent that it could otherwise reverse charge and present a hazard. After refreshing or replacing the AAA cell, the device will continue to operate and the remaining life in the AA cells can be used until they are drained. Approximately 1/2 of the capacity of the AAA cell is used for the Bluetooth connection for 1 year of quiescent connectivity, leaving the remaining juice for the device it is installed in. Of course, for high drain devices, you'll probably be changing or recharging the AAA cell well before the 1 year mark.

Q: What advantage would this product have over rechargeable batteries?

Nothing.... They are completely 2 different things.. Tether cell let's u use your cell phone to power on but u still need a battery to insert in the tethercell
