Laugh out loud funny, ideal for engaging young readers in a longer book!
Our 6 year old asked for this for Christmas, mainly because he is a massive fan of prehistoric times and was really interested in the Mammoth on the cover. We have read a few other David Walliams books (the World’s Worst Series) but these had been split into mini stories and we hadn’t had such a long book where he really needed to retain information about such a lot of text. We read it together as a family, our 8 year old is a confident reader and often reads a chapter - the chapters aren’t too long and the text isn’t too small so it is ideal for fitting in before bedtime. It is also littered with brilliant Tony Ross illustrations which also help to break the text up and keep them engaged with the story. The book is set in Victorian London and centres around a homeless girl called Elsie; it brings the history of the time to life with some great humour and you Elsie’s character is very endearing, as is her relationship with the Ice Monster. We have laughed out loud at some of the humour, sometimes it has gone over the kids heads but they laugh at the more obvious humour and some of the sounds we have to make if we are reading it!Our book was delivered in perfect condition, he hardback is solidly made and it comes with a dust cover. I think a hardback version of a long story like this is a great idea for he kids as it makes it more durable when you are reading it over such a long period of time.Without any spoilers the lasting message from the book is that it doesn’t matter what material possessions you have to make it through life’s journey; Elsie has nothing but yet she has a massive heart that is capable of bringing people together and enabling them to achieve big things. We have thoroughly enjoyed the book and would recommend.

An adventure fit for everyone
This is a book filled with fun... and noises...Throughout the book, I can hear thuds, booms, arrrghs and so many sounds. And there are amusing pictures of some of the scenes making reading to be so much fun and at times, hilarious. For any young reader, I could imagine the giggling and mimicking when they read about the adventures and misadventures. For the adults who will be reading this book for their kids, I could see their kids oohing and ahhing over every exciting section in the book. This book has the effect of drawing readers into the ‘action-packed’ story. I was trying to pronounce all the ‘sound’ and I found it extremely amusing to do so. I enjoyed the reading a lot.
