Brilliant! A huge addition to sociological and criminological theory
Brilliant! A huge addition to sociological and criminological theory. Yes, as one reviewer mentioned, it is written in a erudite style, but alas, it is an academic book. Stuart adds to the tradition of urban policing by developing the idea of "therapeutic policing," which expands the sociological understanding of the ways in which neo-liberalism again rears its ugly head - this time as the de facto enforcement arm of the social service scheme. Stuart spends five years in Skid Row, Los Angeles as an ethnographer, spending significant time with all actors of the neighborhood including residents, service workers, social activists, and police officers. This form of study allows him to examine, in depth, the nuance of policing in one of the most impoverished and stigmatized communities in the U.S. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in policing and its effects within Skid Row. I recommend it to all of my students and assign it for several of my social science undergraduate courses.

This is a book everyone should read.
This book gives a great sociological perspective for all of us who are getting by, but how easy it would be for us to be living on Skid Row...

get the paperback not the kindle version
The kindle version only has the location of the pages... it doesn't have the actual page numbers. I bought this book for class but it is so difficult to cite from this book because there are no page numbers... so buy the paperback version if you want to cite this book.
