Don't Look Up
PROS: Easy no fuss setup. The remote sync’d to the base station in less than a minute. The signal is very strong and seems reliable. The base station screen is large and as easy to read as a tablet computer. The operational controls are smartly laid out and easy to use.Temperature and humidity readings seem accurate based on comparison to other weather instruments I have.AcuRite says it takes a couple of weeks of learning for the unit to improve the accuracy of the weather forecasts for my area. But, even after only a day of use, its forecast agreed with other weather stations I own.One thing I found novel: The weather icon for partly cloudy skies during the evening is a moon and stars – which means it will be dark tonight.CONS: The screen must be viewed by looking down on it (see photos). If the screen is above your eye level, you will not be able to see the numbers. This means that the station was meant to be used on a desk. I initially place mine on a book shelf in my living room – but, even standing, my wife (who is shorter than I am) couldn’t read the numbers because she had to look up to the display.Forget wall mounting, that’s a joke. First, it must be mounted at waist level so you’re always looking down at the display – otherwise, you won’t see anything. Second, the AC power cord has a right angle plug that pushes the unit away from the wall so it can never be flush against the wall.

Advanced from competition
Extremely easy to set-up, works perfectly right out of the box. It immediately picked up the outdoor sensor, and the only adjustment I needed to make was for my time zone, which was no effort at all. The instructions are clear and simple.I have used the La Crosse systems with good results, but when an older version finally broke I decided to try this unit. The colors are bright and easy to read, the unit has some wonderful features such as 24 hour high and low display, low battery warning, remote sensor strength, and immediate date and time set. It does not connect to the government atomic clock, but it does not need to as it has a factory set battery back-up and automatic DST adjustment for spring and fall. The display must be plugged in, but also has a (separate) battery back up with a button to push during a power outage to display the screen. The time back up has a long life replaceable factory installed battery similar to those used in computers, and the display back-up batteries are three AAs (not included)

Total fake — not a sensor.
Total junk. I was a bit sceptical when what appeared to be the outdoor temp showed up as soon as I plugged the display unit in, when the sensor was still in the house. Thought maybe it was a coincidence. Put the outdoor sensor out, and there was no change. Brought the sensor indoors overnight, and in the morning the display showed the exact same stats as my phone weather app. Unplugged the display, and the sensor still shows a blinking light indicating it’s communicating with the display. Took batteries out of sensor, plugged in display and it accurately tracked the temp throughout the day — or rather seemed to, as it displayed within 1-2 degrees of what the phone says. It’s not actually a weather station. It’s clearly getting its data from the same NWS as every phone app, and the “sensor” is some kind of phony decoy device to make you think you’re getting a hyper-local reading.

Beautiful, but inaccurate
This is a truly beautiful weather station. When plugged into an outlet, the screen is large, bright and colorful. The data are presented clearly in large, easy-to-read numerals. (One must view it from above, however, or the numerals disappear.) The trending data graph is also very intuitive and attractive. I went shopping for a new, more modern weather station when the remote sensor/sender for my five-year-old, tried and true Ambient model WS-1170 died. This AcuRite model appeared to fill the bill. I was very impressed with the looks of the first example I received, but the accuracy left a lot to be desired. The indoor temperature consistently read 1.5 to 2 degrees warmer than the conventional thermometers (and my Ambient unit) that I compared it to. The barometric pressure consistently read 0.2" to 0.25" lower than the reading given by the AWOS at my local airport (as well as my faithful Ambient unit). Therefore, it always forecast rain, even on a beautiful sunny day with no rain anywhere in the NWS forecast. Based on these inaccuracies, I ordered a replacement from Amazon which came in one day! Then I read the troubleshooting guide which says that it can take up to two weeks for the pressure reading to "calibrate." So I put my old Ambient unit and the two AcuRite units on a shelf and waited the required two weeks, plus a few days. Nothing changed. Both AcuRite units read at least 0.20" low on pressure and 1.5 or more degrees warm. I did make the suggested humidity adjustment to the forecasting algorithm to decrease the probability of a rain forecast. They did, indeed, forecast less rain. But, despite several adjustments, I never got to the point that I considered the "Precision" forecast to be at all useful. It predicts the weather and temperatures 4, 8, and 12 hours into the future. These were worthless; I could do just as well following the rule: "it gets cooler at night and warmer in the daytime." The attached photo shows the comparison. In summary: They are beautiful, bright and colorful units. The viewing angle is important: they must be mounted below eye level or the numerals will be invisible. The pressure reading is inaccurate and does not calibrate on its own, nor can the user calibrate it (like I can with my old Ambient unit). Indoor temperature reads 1.5 - 2.0 degrees warm. The base unit must be plugged in, but still requires three AA batteries, plus a button battery for the clock. The "Precision" forecasting feature is worthless.I recently discovered that Amazon sells replacement remote sensor/sender units for my old Ambient model. So, I am returning both of the AcuRite stations and going back to my faithful Ambient model. It may be colorless and boring, but it gives good accurate, reliable data and a reasonably useful forecast.
