AWS DeepLens (2019 Edition) – deep learning-enabled video camera for developers

This is basically a simple Linux computer with a camera and networking abilities added. The example models are easy to deploy and play with to get started, and if you are planning to tune those models for your own use on Sagemaker and deploy them you will find it mostly easy.I found moving beyond that to truly custom models or different model architectures meant digging deeply into Linux. I am pretty skilled at programming and technical troubleshooting and I still found it very frustrating at times. Frustration is a great aid to learning so I am not unhappy with my results but if you are not skilled at working on or with Linux it would probably be overwhelming.- Files such as camera images cannot be saved locally to the camera (without low-level Linux changes) but they can be saved easily to S3.- At more than one point the camera stopped working without deregistration and reregistration; it was never clear why.

I saw many of the reviews before buying indication this was hard to set up, but thought maybe that was due to lack of experience with AWS.I can say for sure this was one of my hardest experiences getting an AWS service to work.It seems like things are actively broken in the DeepLens registration process, and that is a real shame to have to work through for a $250 item.

Just got the new v1.1 DeepLens. I have put 6 hours into trying to register it on 3 different machines (Mac and PC). I have looked at every tutorial available online and read every forum that AWS has to offer. This device is beyond buggy. It requires a software update that is only available through micro HDMI cables. Once you manage to "guess" your way to that point, it will connect. But wait, oh wait, it will drop the USB connection (even when it is plugged in) throwing you back to the abyss of square one. DO NOT BUY unless you have a crazy amount of time to troubleshoot. To make matters worse, AWS does not appear to be monitoring the troubleshooting forums with any regularity. v1.1 is still a wild west.AWS makes it sound like this is a great plug-and-play device. It isn't. Your money is better spent elsewhere.

I have been tryed the registration following the instruccion for version 1.1, but it does not work.The support aws does not resolve the issues and there are a lot of people with the same problem.
