Junk
I bought this to potentially keep my outdoor cats (former strays) off of the hood of my new car. Before I did that, I decided to test it. I put it within about 6 inches of a heavily trafficked area and sat watching all 5 cats walk past, turn to look at it when it went off, walk over and sniff it, then move on. Attached is a picture of one cat inspecting the unit as it went off. No urgency, not the slightest bit frightened off by it. One actually laid down beside it. When another cat would walk in front and set it off, he didn't even bother looking up after the second or third time.I don't know that the persons stating how well this worked are paid shills; but I have a VERY hard time believing this works on any cats. Complete garbage that should be taken off the market as a scam.

I put it on the post nearest the section he liked first and immediately he stopped going to that section ...
My cat kept jumping onto my fence, to go into my neighbors trees and kidnapping baby birds. He took 6 babies in 1 month. I got this as a I-don't-know-what-else-to-do. Omg!!! It's fabulous!!! I put it on the post nearest the section he liked first and immediately he stopped going to that section of the fence entirely. Wouldn't even go near it. After about a month, I moved it across the yard and sure enough, I heard him one night jump to the gate, twice and twice slide down. Now he avoids the whole fence. I wish I knew about this earlier! Simply amazing! Honestly if I didn't know my cat and his behavior so well, I wouldn't have believed it.

Seems to work...but
I have a couple of small issues with this deterrent.First, mine is in a garden bed to keep my cats from going potty in the soil (and nibbling on my greens). My garden has tomato plants and green beans, which are tall and sometimes the sensor does not pick up on movement, as the red light indicator does not go off. When I place it in the open, it seems to have a nice, sensitive sensor...but not so much if the sensor has things in it's way (makes sense, right?!). So if you're using it in a tall, crowded area, this may not be your best solution.Second, my cats seem to have gotten used to it a bit. When I first put it up, I watched as the startled away once they heard the sound (which of course, I can't hear, but I know went on because I saw the indicator light go off). But now, they creep slowly, then the light goes on and they simply freeze (the high pitch sound lasts for about 5 seconds). Then they continue to move in a slow, stalking way and continue into the garden area. Still, they haven't pooped, pee'd or eaten in my garden, so I guess for the most part it has been working.I am going to move it to another location to keep them on their toes, so they hear the sound when they aren't expecting it. I have read other reviewers say this works to keep the animals guessing. On the plus side....NO INSTALLATION hassles! Simply stake it in the ground with a 9 volt battery and walk away. Easy!Good luck!

Good deterrent but keep it dry
We had neighborhood cats using various areas of our yard as their bathroom and we tried out one Catstop. It worked! I placed it carefully to ward off the cats as they entered the yard in various locations, trying to keep it in spots where it would avoid the elements. Well, the cats stopped showing up and soon our gardens were no longer littered with poo. The best part was that we only needed to use it one location for about 6 weeks, then we moved it, and the cats didn't return to the previous location. They learned to avoid each spot this was placed in. After about 5 months of moving it around, the cats stopped pooing in the yard.Keep in mind that the Catstop's field of view is realistically about 45-60 degrees directing in front of the unit, up to about 15 feet away. Placement is critical. You want to get the cat as it headed to the destination, but you don't want to leave them an angle where they avoid the Catstop. Also be aware that any movement will activate the unit, including people walking by, cars, birds, etc. Place it for maximum effectiveness but be careful of the battery life. We found a single battery lasted about 6-8 weeks in a high-traffic location.CON: The Catstop hates water. These are not well-designed for all-weather use, but honestly I've rarely seen outdoor electronics that are perfectly sealed against the elements. We live in Portland, OR, where it rains off and on for most of the Fall and Winter. In one location I carefully wrapped the unit in plastic to keep it as dry as possible, making sure the sensor was not blocked at all. In other locations I placed the unit under cover to keep it dry.But eventually the unit got wet and over time, the moisture killed it. As it slowly died, it became less and less reliable to the point where either the sensor would not trip at all or would trip constantly. However, it did what we wanted it to do and that was $45 well-spent. I'd buy it again if the problem returns, but this time I'd do a better job of keeping it dry.I'd also recommend this to anyone I know, with that one caveat.

Cats are still coming...
I have this catstop in place at the corner of my shed, but cats have still entered the area, only 4 feet away, and they are passing within the 20' radius with no sign of discomfort. The only product that deterred them from the area is the scatmat I put right where they would leap from the other yard, and that was very effective. It was flipped over the very day I first put it out, probably when they leaped off the surface. I will try the catstop in another spot in the yard, but then will return it if they still come in.I had high hopes for this catstop and it does blink red when I pass it, so the batteries do work. The cats still make all the yards around my house smell with their constant pooping and have catfights late at night, tear up the deck furniture with their claws, jump on the roof and wake me up, then jump off the roof, tearing up the awnings and the outdoor swing's canopy on the way off. I'll try another product.
