The TracMe is a Personal Locator Beacon that sets a new standard for non-satellite technology in saving rescue time and rescue team resources after a person is reported lost. This 11th essential is meant for families, scouting/activity groups, and weekend warriors who push hard into the backcountry. Once a person is reported lost, rescue workers can use any 2-way radio to home in on him/her for a quick rescue. The device is super simple to operate. Before you leave home tell a responsible party where you will be and when you will return. At the trailhead leave the preprinted TracMe card on your dashboard. Carry TracMe in an easily accessible spot, like around your neck on the included lanyard or clipped to a pack strap. If you find yourself in need of help or rescue, just pull the yellow part of the TracMe and sit tight. Once the responsible party notifies the authorities that you haven't returned on time, the rescue personal can use the signal from TracMe to locate you and take you home. When you do arrive home call TracMe to have your device replaced. Its that simple. TracMe's goal is to bring you home safe by working with rescue workers to make a faster search. TracMe doesn't replace good sense and experience but can be an aid in the event of an emergency or accident.

Make sure you understand what you are NOT buying
From the home page of Tracme's web site: "The Tracme is not a replacement for a 406 MHz EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) or PLB."Before you buy this, learn the answers to the following questions: 1) Who is monitoring for your emergency transmition (Tracme vs. a real PLB)? 2) What is the effective range of the device? 3) Do rescue agencies generally have the direction-finding equipment to home in on the device (Tracme vs. a real PLB)?In addition to PLBs, "Spot" beacons may also be a reasonable option for some people.
