JunkBots, Bugbots, and Bots on Wheels: Building Simple Robots With BEAM Technology

Must have starter book for those interesting in building robots.
Mark Tilden's early robotics work revolves around his patented nervous networks. Tilden was building small, agile and light-weight, walking robots in the late 1980s to early 1990s with a handful of transistors and bits and pieces salvaged from broken and discarded electronics. As an educator, Mark has encouraged the hobbyist community to experiment with and even improve on his technology. Junkbots, Bugbots & Bots on Wheels is a "must have" starter book for all of the young Roboticists coming up through the ranks. This books does not delve deeply into the technology, but a how-to, hands-on book with step by step instructions that can be followed by school children with some guidance from adults. I highly recommend this book for those wanting to get started in building simple and inexpensive robots. These robots have no microprocessors and require no programming. Yet, with hard-wired intelligence, these robots can avoid obstacles, seek or avoid light and more. Currently, Tilden is working with Wowee designing commercial robotic toys for the masses.

Hardware focused BEAM bot reference
This is a great crash course on finding parts to get your first BEAM bots up and running. I enjoyed the light humorous writing and clear diagrams.I wish this book covered a little more theory of the circuit design because without the knowledge of how these components are working together, there isn't much room to expand or integrate these circuits with your existing projects. I also think this book could stand to be updated to include servos and LiPo batteries, as those are more readily available now.Overall though, one of the better consumer level robot books I've seen because it is totally focused on hardware.

Great Book!!
This book was a gift for my boyfriend who was getting curious about engineering. He had a harder time finding things to make little solar run bots then understanding the book. The book was really well instructed and my boyfriend was able to get a better understanding. He made a bunch of stuff and has become ALOT more knowledgeable!

Good book about B.E.A.M. robotics
This is a well written book about small robots, junk bots, etc. Goes step by step on how to build any of the projects, various points of interest, some history, and other good related info. Gives good recommendations on what to look for in collecting parts to build the robots from, and what to avoid, as well as some good safety recomendations.

Interesting Book
This book is just what my son was looking for to enhance his learning in robotics. It has many projects that a curious boy would like to complete. My 11 yr old with a reading level higher than his age is doing these projects without any adult help.

TOY BAG
Yet another potpourri review and standard "toy" projects but like many of its ilkdoes not present framework of core concepts, upon whichthe newbie can build and develop original devices.

An absolute must buy
I've only recently gotten into the world of robotics, and guided by previous reviews on this book, decided to give it a go. What a buy! It is extremely well written, incredibly humorous and is packed with all the information you could possibly need to indulge your childhood fantasies of building a robot. I also purchased "The Absolute Beginners Guide to Building Robots" which I will also review shortly. Worth every single penny, this book is an absolute must for the prospective robot builder, although it must be said, this book only deals with BEAM (Biology Electronics Aesthetics Mechanics) Technology. For those wondering what that might entail, it is basically building a robot from cheap components without the need for microcontrollers and therefore programming of said microcontrollers. Co-written by the man responsible for RoboSapien and RoboRaptor, this book will guide you in words that everyone can understand. If 10 stars was an available option I would grade it at that. Awesome book
