Appleseed Book 1: The Promethean Challenge Paperback – 27 Nov. 2007

Loved it. I really don't have much to say other than that. I prefer the manga as Deunan is a lot more with it than the anime as opposed to being weaker.

Intelligent and beautiful all at once, and a slap in the face to anyone who ever said comics were for kids. Shirow's first work is an awesome example of sci-fi manga at it's best. Political and philosophical, and with some incredible action, this first book in the acclaimed series introduces you to the characters and setting excellently, while being an entertaining read in itself.So why only four stars instead of five?In places Shirow is highly literate and complex in his writing style, and although the translation into English is excellent, there are one or two spots in the book (which by the author and translators own admission), are a little convoluted when it comes to following the plot, especially if you aren't an attentive reader.That said this is still a superb read, and highly recommended.

Great read

I love this series! Cyberpunk mecha bliss indeed.WW3 is over, but not everyone knows, and people are still fighting in Badside, like Deunan and Briareos. Until they are rescued by Hitomi and taken to Olympus, a utopian city....Or is it? There's a mix of humans and new beings called Bioroids, and Deunan and Bri find that so long as there are different kinds of people there will be differences among them. They discover this only after they're thrown in the middle of a web of intrigue, after they join the ESWAT team!! I love the story of the human Deunan, and her boyfriend, the big cyborg, and how they love the adventure and excitement. But things get really complicated, and expect lots of philosophy, politics and drama as the series progresses, with questions about the nature of humanity itself.Shirow's art is stunningly detailed, and any fans of Ghost in the Shell will adore the mecha and big guns on show. The Landmate or Guges suits are fantastic, and yes, I would love one!Appleseed is truly a manga masterwork! Read the whole series!! Fab!!

Not bad, this was defiantly for me instead of the overly-sexualised bulls*** of Ghost In The Shell.

Wonderful, bold cyberpunk art with an intelligent, futuristic storyline. Cover-to-cover guns, girls and mech armour.Why four stars?Some parts are slow moving and a few panels are very confusing, but some clever panels and plenty of story for the price. You have to keep on reading, which is why its a good job Shirow is showing no signs of stopping. Worth it.
