Great quality, read for more information
The connector is not keyed; this is good for compatibility but does make installation a bit annoying. The red line on the ribbon is pin one (1); the stripe needs to be on the opposite end of the missing pin on your motherboard. If the pin is not missing, then get something to bridge the second and third pin, open a serial console of your choice (I recommend TeraTerm on Windows and MiniCOM on Linux) and try to send some text. If you don't see it appear, you need to flip the connector around. To find pins two (2) and three (3), you can look up on a search engine of your choice "RS-232 DB9 pinout" and flip to the images. Note you do not need to power the machine down to flip it around, just don't use any metal or otherwise conductive tools to disconnect it and you should be fine.

No problems so far
I have an x64 Linux router/firewall PC that I built into a rackmount case, based on the ASUS B450 Prime II motherboard. This adapter works absolutely fine for exposing the board's built in COM1 port. I am able to get the GRUB boot loader as well as a 115200 console working with a null modem adapter to my Macbook Air. Useful for when I do something stupid and lock myself out!

Needed a serial port!
My motherboard has the headers but no port. I needed a long cable to reach from the mobo to the rear of the case and this one was long enough. The one I already had from an ancient PC case was not quite long enough.I did not look at the picture closely enough but this has the "half slot" plate. My PC case has the full slots. I removed from the included plate and mounted on a standard plate.Double check what size plate you need and verify how much cable you need to reach from your header to the rear of the case. Take in to account any existing add on cards. I had to route around my video card and needed the extra length. I bundled this with some other items and was able to get the free shipping.Highly recommend for those that still need a serial port!

Perfect for adding Serial to New Server
Needed a console cable port on a new server build. The board supported a serial header, but didn't come with the cord. I didn't have any left in the parts bag, so I ordered this. It works perfectly in the 2U rackmount case, and functions flawlessly for console connection to the switches and router. Price is reasonable, too.

NOTE: this is "AT/EVEREX" pinout
The product is OK, but the description fails to mention that these adapters are "AT/EVEREX" style. If your board uses the other standard then these won't work for you (maybe the problem other reviewers had?). If the description was fixed to explain that it is this type and the current warning about compatibility made more clear, this would be a 5 star item.My Supermicro mainboard needed the other style, "DTK/INTEL". Here is a good description of both:http://pinoutsguide.com/Motherboard/rs232_header_pinout.shtmlI was able to redo the IDC connector to make it work, but having gotten the right product would have been much better.

Worked perfectly for a HTPC I built. I didn't actually need the serial port so I cut it off and spliced the wires for a special project that involved wiring some LED's to the COM port on my motherboard and this worked perfectly!
