Canoeing & Camping Beyond the Basics: 30Th Anniversary Edition (How to Paddle Series)

Used book in almost new condition. Not sure if newest edition. Lots of product discussions out-of-date. Definitely can figure out what new products to substitute! Probably most knowledgeable American guide and writer on canoeing. Living legend, known to have an opinion on everything.

The author has extensive experience in wilderness canoeing and camping; and much of this practical experience is summarized in this book. There is a great deal of information and recommendations on equipment and gear, ranging from canoes and tents - to footwear and saws. The author also covers dozens of techniques for safer, drier, and more enjoyable wilderness canoeing ranging from dealing with bears to how portage the canoe. If you're planning on a wilderness canoeing trip, whether or not you're an experienced canoeist, this is a phenomenal read.

3 stars because it has a wealth of varied information, but this is hardly "beyond" the basics....it IS the basics.Nice book I'll add to my collection but no knew information here...

My dad and I on a whim took a trip up to the BWCAW last year and it is now an annual trip. After that first year we were looking for some good ideas on what to bring and any tips for canoeing and camping. This book holds a ton of information in it and is a great read. We took ideas from what to pack, how to store gear, how to paddle in certain currents, and even got the design and specs to make yokes for our canoes. AWESOME book. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for some good tips for living in the outdoors.

Basic guide, informative. I now paddle more effectively. This is one of those books you can purchase, and reduce the time it takes you to come up to speed, or you can learn over some period of time by hook or crook.

Having just come into possession of an inflatable tandem canoe, I was looking for a book with a good discussion of paddling techniques, launching/landing, safe navigation etc. This book looked the most promising, but I ended up returning it.There is a lot of useful information in this book, but not enough detail on the topics I'm interested in. For example, there is a thorough discussion of different canoe shapes. But I am not in the market for a canoe. Meanwhile, the only mention of inflatable canoes is in the caption of a picture, where the author states that inflatable canoes handle waves better. Surely there is more to be said?The discussion of paddling techniques is more of a quick review with a few simple sketches than something to learn from. I also felt that more could be said about safe navigation on different kinds of water, e.g. rivers, lakes and tidelands. The camping advice was less useful to me, as I have some experience with backpacking.Back to watching paddling instruction clips on YouTube...

My dad loves it. My dad used to canoe and kayak a lot, say 30+ years ago. He is now starting to get back into it as he has a neighbor he can go with and a nice quiet river 15 min away. He told me it was a great review of what he did know and a lot of new information that was more advanced. He said it had some good techniques that he could use now that he is older and has a bad shoulder.

It's a good book for reference. I disagree with some of what the author expresses, but not much. And I bought the book for kayaking, so it's pretty easy to cross-over the information. Most of the information on tents & gear are discussed in greater detail in Cliff Jacobson's videos.

If you are thinking about canoeing and camping this book covers those two topics as only Cliff can do. He has written other books such as, Camping. If you read Cliff's other publications you will find some repetition but you will also learn new things as well. I purchase a number of Cliff's books and I don't mind the repetition. It is minimal and I always learn something new in each book. He has a nice writing style.

Super zusammenfassung von jemanden der das schon Jahre macht. Ich merke das er weis von was er spricht - paddle selbst seit 25 Jahren. Einzig die Material und Produktionsbeschreibung zu Thema Laminatboote ist NICHT state of the art
